Joe,
Your comment about star colors reminds me about a memorable experience from Medoc last night ...
Many times at these public observing sessions you meet someone who you KNOW you are connecting with. For me, it was a young girl (perhaps 10 or 11) who asked me "what is that red star to the left of Jupiter?"
Short answer, it was Betelgeuse ... but the interesting thing was the rest of her family said something about there being no color in any of the stars. But I tried to show there was. I asked the girl about Rigel ... she said bluish. I asked about Capella ... she said yellow. I asked about Arcturus ... orange.
I sure hope this young girl has the opportunity to become an amateur astronomer ... because she "sees" things better than most people. She also had a wonderful, inquiring mind, asking all sorts of intelligent questions during the day when we were observing the Sun.
It definitely made yesterday special for me!
