Other Notes:

A Note About Our Liturgy This Season

As a liturgical and sacramental people, we understand that what we do
in worship both expresses what we believe and also shapes and forms
what we believe. At the Church of the Advocate we like to explore
various liturgical traditions from season to season as we are able,
within the parameters established by the Episcopal Church and with
the Bishop's permission, helping us to understand our place in the
expanse of what is the Anglican Communion today. For example, in the
Season of Epiphany, we used the Kenyan Eucharistic Rite, and in Lent
we used the Book of Common Prayer, Rite Two.
In this Season of Easter, we will be returning to the more inclusive
language of Enriching Our Worship, using Eucharistic Prayer Three
from that resource. We will also explore other sources of inclusive
or expansive language, using the newly published St. Helena's Psalter
for our Psalms each Sunday, and Easter Collects from Women's Uncommon
Prayers at the conclusion of our Prayers of the People.
As is often the case at the Advocate, while we explore options from
the contemporary Church, we keep our feet firmly rooted in the
tradition. Our hymn of Praise each week will be the ancient hymn of
the Orthodox tradition, the Troparian. And our sequence, the song
sung before and after the reading of the Gospel, will be the Armenian
Alleluia.
For the Nicene Creed, we will use a variation published in Enriching
Our Worship, which professes that Jesus became "fully human", rather
than saying "and became man". It also neutralizes the gender of the
third person of the Trinity -- the Holy Spirit -- saying, "We
believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds
from the Father, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and
glorified, who has spoken through the prophets." Note
that this version of the Creed also removes the phrase "and the Son",
often known as the filioque clause. This reflects the way the Creed
is said in the Eastern Church and can also serve to stimulate a
lively debate at the Advocate about the relations among the three
persons of the Trinity.

As is customary throughout the Church, because we focus on life in
the light of the Resurrection for the Season of Easter, we will not
have a confession and absolution in our Easter liturgy.
We will respond to the Prayers each week singing "What a Friend We
Have in Jesus".
At the conclusion of the liturgy itself, after the dismissal, we will
engage in a simple dance (not as long as last year's), singing the
Easter Troparian once again.

Small Groups this Season
Conversations on Race. As the Advocate community continues to explore
the many dimensions of racism and white privilege in our lives and in
our world, the People of the Advocate are invited to participate in
three Conversations on Race this Easter Season. Groups will meet in
Advocate host homes at a time and day convenient to all to share
experiences and perspectives. Some may share a potluck supper, or
will include child care for kids. Signup at Church or by email to:
Tom Fisher <tfisher97 at nc.rr.com> For further information contact:
Sissy Holloman, Tom Fisher or Frank Lombard.
The First Conversation: How we experienced race growing up, will be
held at the home of Sissy and William Holloman. 6:30 - 8:00 PM. Bring
a dish to share as you are able. Child care provided.
Second Conversation: how we experience race in our workplace, school,
community or family today. Location(s) and date to be determined.
Third Conversation: How we might bring justice, compassion and
transformation to bear as we confront racism in our community and
world. Location(s) and date to be determined.
Christ is Risen from the dead, trampling down death by death, and
upon those in the tomb bestowing life!	(The Easter Troparian.)

Go with God.
