A Word from Roxane Gwyn on this summer's Book Study on The Death of
Innocents
Greetings, Advocate Friends! I'm looking forward to my return to Chapel
Hill in a few weeks, and to facilitating a book group on The Death of
Innocents: an Eyewitness Account of Wrongful Executions by Sister Helen
Prejean. It's the book that incoming UNC freshmen are reading this year and
is really powerful. We'll be meeting at 7 p.m. on three Wednesdays -- July
18, July 25, and August 1 at Ephesus Place. Here's part of the blurb from
the book jacket: "...a brave and fiercely argued new book that tests the
moral edge of the debate on capital punishment: What if we're executing
innocent men? ...two cases in point...convicted of murder on flimsy
evidence...executed in spite of numerous appeals. Sister Helen Prejean
watched both of them die...Prejean brilliantly dismantles the legal and
religious arguments that have been used to justify the death penalty..." If
you'd like to join this group -- and bring a friend if you are so led -- let
me know (rgwyn at nc.rr.com) as soon as possible and then I'll purchase some
books and get one to you.
Contemplative Prayer Retreat: Save the dates August 3 to 5 if you are
interested in attending the Contemplative Prayer Group silent retreat. It
will take place at Avila Retreat Center which is in Durham, the northwest
corner. In addition to silence and contemplative prayer sessions there will
be discussion of The Cloud of Unknowing for those who are interested in
reading and discussing that spiritual classic. Cost is approximately $125
for two nights, $65 for one night (financial assitance is available form the
Vicar or Sub-Vicar this summer). For further information contact Char
Sullivan at 542-2521 or <mailto:charsullivan at yahoo.com>

Mountain/Ski Trip Ahead! The Advocate's first ski and mountain weekend at
Valle Crucis and Boone North Carolina has been tentatively scheduled for
February 1-3 2008. Some will ski, some will hike, some will browse the
shops. All will enjoy good fellowship and ldoging in a beautiful setting. If
think you'd like to go, or if you'd like to have input in any of the
planning, please contact John and Sandy Barnhart --

The blessing of God,
The eternal goodwill of God,
The shalom of God,
The wildness and the warmth of God,
Be among us and between us
Now and always. Amen.
God bless you in your ministry.
Grace and peace,
