Hi Menas,
As you requested, I'm rephrasing my comments for the group... since everyone
hung up just when I started to talk. (WELL!).
1. Vanessa's notion that this is the spot for hard-working data set
authors/compilers to PUBLISH their data sets is a great idea and would provide a
service to this community, and would be a good reason to go forward anyhow.
2. Frew/Howard's notion that this could also then allow a vetting and review to
happen so that only those data sets that have passed can be officially published
adds value to this effort. (other data sets can be included in a section of
not-quite-ready-for-prime-time data sets... we don't need to refuse them
entirely).
3. Bruce B's desire to be able to create a venue that explores data in other
ways (perhaps even indexed to a pixel) could be part of another SECTION of the
eJournal, where such discussions can be fostered in a monitored arena as citable
publications.
4. I added the idea that DATA TOOLS, including their code (IDL, MATLAB, C++,
etc.) could be published, and reviewed in a third section.
5. I also noted that in the NSDL there is a project (which I have not again
located) where the technology for doing an eJournal that can be compiled into an
annual Printed journal (with proper page numbers and ISBN, etc.) is being
developed. This could help the Foundation.
6. As Tamara noted, the journal JESSE is also a good model (talk to Martin).
THATS it... see what you miss when you hang up after only one hour!
cheers
bruce
