Hi everyone,
Lest you have any lingering doubt about the adverse impact of a construction contractor on an extant trail, please visit the ATT near my house, from Massey Chapel Rd. southbound. The passage of time has not begun to heal the wounds remaining from a residential utility dig a few years ago.
The contractor used such a large, coarse grade of gravel to "improve" our 10' trail that trail users have since worn a de facto 12" dirt trail along the shoulder, in order to avoid the punishment to heels and wheels. After you pass this brighter and harsher section, the return to our "unimproved" ATT is dramatic: Denser shade, quieter acoustics, plus a natural surface that is now carpeted in pine needles.

(3) Trail reconstruction and
repair after maintenance access are critical issues for the duration of
joint use of the ROW. A pipeline contractor cannot be expected to do a
good trail reconstruction job, regardless of the specifications. They
are not in the trail construction business, they may not have the
specific equipment required, they may not have the temperament for that
level of detail, they may not appreciate the sophistication and
subtleties of good trail construction, etc.
