Here is the latest communications on the Adopt-a-Trail Grant. Please
bring any questions/comments to the meeting tonight.

Hi Christian, Bill, and Bill,

As a follow-up to Christian's query on the two Adopt-a-Trails grants,
based on the final applications that were submitted, the
two grants include the tasks listed below.

EcoAccess has a supporting role in this work at the volunteer levels
outlined below that we agreed on. Part 2 includes about $1,000 for TGC
and EcoAccess to cover some costs associated with the
project. Unfortunately, the grant amounts are pretty small, so there's
not a whole lot of resource. However, as you've noted, Christian, the
grants provide potential leverage with which to pursue additional funds
to cover staff time spent on the project.

One question is whether to write a smaller grant just to cover EcoAccess
time on this phase of the project, or whether to write a larger grant
that also takes on additional tasks in the medium-term plan that we
sketched out this spring. Whatever approach we choose, we'll need to
make a joint decision on it, since we'll be using our collective work to
date as the basis for pursuing the funds.

One thing we might consider is pursuing a larger grant and shooting for
the Feb. 1st, 2006 deadline for the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation. We
might include some EcoAccess and TGC time from the Adopt-a-Trails tasks,
along with the preparation of a regional trails map and website. By
early next year, we should have definite confirmation on the two
Adopt-a-Trails grants and should be underway with the project. This
would also give us more time to prepare the ZSR application. I recently
attended a session on Z. Smith Reynolds' new grant format, and it is
significantly more involved than the Adopt-a-Trails grants.

What do you think?

Yours,
Ben

Ben --- you are the gatekeeper and man in the middle of the
Adopt-a-Trail Grants. How do you suggest I respond to Christian on
his AaT questions? The rest of this can be taken at its FYI value.

Hi Bill. I appreciate your copying me on this communication. Very
    interesting.

Is any part of this something that EcoAccess could pick up and run
with? Our organization is moving opportunistically these days, hence
    the question.

Switching subjects slightly, regarding the Adopt-A-Trail (pending)
grant, EcoAccess commited itself to several project tasks, as follows:

    - Query trails planning and mgmt. organizations about existing data
    (participating organ.)
    - Acquire improved trails data through field work (lead organ.)
    - Prepare regional map and individual user maps in hard copy and
    electronic format (participating organ.)
    - Create web page to disseminate electronic version (lead organ.)
    - Conduct design workshops w/ trails planning, mgmt., and advocacy
    orgs in region (participating organ.)
    - Conduct outreach to share information and solicit feedback
    (participating organ.)

As EcoAccess was not one of the grantees and assuming TGC gets its
grant, we're wondering if TGC can fund EcoAccess for any portion of
these activities and/or should EcoAccess pursue its own funding. Z
Smith Reynolds is having their grant funding cycle now so EcoAccess
could put in a proposal. EcoAccess would target the environmentalist
community (including students) for volunteers to perform the field
work data collection activity. It is not too early for us to start
    planning this activity.

I would appreciate your letting me know your thoughts on this. I
trust you're having a pleasant summer. Happy summer solstice day!

    - Christian
