[Greenway-board] September TGC Meeting Agenda

Hi all,
I would like to respectfully dissent from the draft letter that is proposed to be sent to NCDOT, for the reasons that I expressed on Sept. 9 as a TRTC board member.
Essentially, I don't see the benefits of denying a smooth surface to 15 miles of the 22 mile ATT project. When the trail's master plan was done, that corridor was rural and undeveloped, an equestrian's dream environment. However, for the present and the future, this area could be better described as Cary's second hundred thousand.
For the ATT segments that are already paved, I believe it would be inaccurate for TGC to claim that "Pedestrians and runners, mountain (and hybrid) bicyclists ... prefer or require an unpaved surface." The sheer numbers of ATT users in Durham (83 on my most recent visit) indicate that asphalt is not a problem.
I'd prefer that such a letter be sent as an individual appeal rather than implying a group consensus, where consensus does not yet exist.
Thanks,
Dave

Hi TGC Board,
Leslie Kennedy has sent most of you a draft of a letter from the TGC to
be sent to David King at NCDOT concerning paving the American Tobacco
Trail. This was requested by everyone at our August meeting. We'll
discuss and approve this tonight.
