Subject: September 2004 Lead Safe Maintenance Training

Dear Property Owners, Managers and Rehab Contractors:
If you rent a home built prior to 1978, your tenants may be at risk of lead
poisoning. Young children are especially susceptible to lead poisoning,
which can cause brain damage resulting in a learning disability and/or
mental retardation. In addition, anyone renovating and/or maintaining an
older home may also be at risk of lead poisoning.
To help address this problem, the Durham Affordable Housing Coalition is
coordinating a training next month. Here are the particulars on the
training:
Event: LEAD-SAFE MAINTENANCE TRAINING
Date: Friday September 17, 2004
Location: Hayti Heritage Center
804 Old Fayetteville St. In The Community Room
Time: 9:00 AM 5:00 PM
Cost: FREE
Trainer: Susan Perez-Travers and Lorisa Seibel
Cosponsors: City of Durham Lead Program
N.C. Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program
The training is designed to teach homeowners, property managers, maintenance
staff, and renovators about lead-safe maintenance practices. Other benefits
of attending include:
· Training satisfies HUD requirement for anyone renovating/remodeling
a residential property with federal funds as well as any Section 8 property
owner renovating/remodeling his or her unit(s).
· Learn about City and County programs to help assess and address
lead hazards.
· Find out about limited liability relief from potential lead
poisoning litigation through the State Preventive Maintenance Program.
If you are interested in participating in this training, please complete the
enclosed registration form and fax it to 688-0082 by Wednesday, September
15th 2004. If you have any questions, please feel free to call me at
683-1185, extension 26.
Sincerely,
Susan Perez-Travers
