It was a great article...we even got a picture of my camera-shy neighbor,
Charlie, snuck onto the front page of the Real Estate Section!!! Won't he
be surprised when I show him!!! Many thanks to Don Evans of The Durham News
for a great and accurate write-up and to Sylvia Williams for making it
happen!!! I fear that Durham's best-kept secret (i.e., Edward Street) has
now been let out of the bag!!!
In addition to the recent listings at 308 Edward Street and 312 Edward
Street, there is another new renovation being offered half a block away from
us at the corner of Edward Street and North Elizabeth Street. The
renovation was completed by Chad Church, who has done other houses on Edward
Street and East Trinity Avenue, late last year. The house is a brick
bungalow, built in 1928, and is being offered around $180,000, I think. It
is not open this weekend along with Sylvia and Helena's, but there are
flyers up on the property that show what it looks like inside.
Also, up for sale/renovation/ready for a little TLC around Edward Street are
a great farmhouse-style house (for sale by owner) on the 200th block of East
Geer Street, a bungalow (for sale by Committed Real Estate) on the 300th
block of East Geer Street, and a bungalow (for sale by Howard Perry and
Walston) on the 1200th block of North Roxboro Street. We have also been
watching a great renovation of the green two-story farmhouse on the corner
of East Geer Street and Gurley Street for the last six months or so...it
looks like it will be ready to be put up for sale soon.
Lots of opportunities abound for both renovators as well as folks who want
an older home, but none of the headaches of doing the work themselves!!!
As someone who is very committed to this neighborhood, I can attest that
Sylvia, Helena, and Chad (as well as Suzie Wortham who renovated 308 Edward
Street a couple of years ago) have done wonderful jobs on these houses.
They are all full of wonderful architectural details. Jon and I are proud
to have them as neighbors!!!

There is a cool article in today's News & Observer/Durham News Real Estate
section. "New life on old block" talks about our positive efforts on Edward
Street in Old North Durham in marrying renovations and community building.
There is also another article in the main Durham News section about
corporate investments in and around Old North Durham ( "Investors buy into
neighborhood, hope to hit home run" http://www.thedurha
<http://www.thedurhamnews.com/110/story/32653.html>
mnews.com/110/story/32653.html. Lots of good positive stories.
Hopefully you can come join us and check out two of the homes referenced in
the article this Sunday. We'd love to have new neighbors join in on the
fun :-)
Also, we'd like to welcome you to join us at this month's Old North Durham
Neighborhood association potluck on February 12th at 6:30pm at Calvary
United Methodist Church. There you will have an opportunity to hear first
hand from some of the developers involved with the DAP and Trinity Lofts
projects.
Sincerely,
Helena Cragg
