Moisture Management and Mold Prevention in Older Buildings
Preserving Historic Structures

Presentation By: Francis Conlin PE

"Uncontrolled moisture is the most prevalent cause of deterioration in
older and historic buildings. It leads to erosion, corrosion, rot, mold and
ultimately the destruction of materials, finishes, and eventually structural
components". (U.S. Park Service: Preservation Briefs.)

The Moisture Management and Mold Prevention in Older Buildings presentation
is aimed to help preservationists understand the patterns of moisture
movement in order to better manage moisture and prevent moisture problems.
Of particular interest will be how new demands and technologies make
moisture management a challenge in older buildings. Also to be discussed is
what to do should a moisture problem result in mold growth, and how to avoid
bad advice and unnecessary remediation from mold companies that often know
little about construction or the physics of buildings moisture dynamics.

mSolve is a Durham-based, hands-on building science company with experience
in all types of residential and commercial construction. Francis Conlin is a
registered Professional Engineer and Certified Mold Remediator.
