Subject: SoCRA - North Carolina Chapter - Feb.2 - Specialty Practice in
Clinical Research

Dear Colleague in Clinical Research:

The February meeting of the Clinical Research Professionals of North
Carolina (a chapter of SoCRA also referred to as NC east or the RTP
chapter) will be held on Monday, February 2, 2004 at DCRI in Durham from 6
to 7 p.m. The usual driving directions apply (see below).

This month's meeting will feature a speaker from the clinical research
community here in RTP, who is currently the Manager of the Clinical
Research Department at TRIANGLE ORTHOPAEDICS ASSOCIATES, P.A.

Our Topic: The Role of a Specialty Practice in Clinical Device Trials

Presenter: Carol Barmann, MS, CCRP
Manager of the Clinical Research Department
TRIANGLE ORTHOPAEDICS ASSOCIATES, P.A., 120 William Penn Plaza, Durham, NC 27704

Summary:
The importance of the Clinical Research Coordinator's role in the research
process is often underestimated and poorly appreciated. In addition, the
process of performing research in the environment of specialty practice is
a subject that most clinical research professional would like to understand
better. Thirdly, a comparison of device trials to drug trial is useful for
a comprehensive understanding of clinical research.

Ms. Barmann has prepared a presentation that will introduce the role of a
specialty practice in clinical research from the perspective of the
practice. She will summarize and give examples some of the device trials
done at her practice and in the process provide a comparison between the
particulars of a device trial versus the drug trials. She will be
available for questions.

The presentation includes information on the following topics:
                              I. Practice Statistics
                             II. Types of Clinical Trials
                            III. Devices versus Drugs
                             IV. Device Trials at TOA

Biosketch:

Carol Barmann is a Clinical Research Coordinator and Manager of the
Clinical Research Department at a local specialty practice. She has come
to this profession following years of teaching at the college level in the
areas of Biology, Human Anatomy and Physiology, Chemistry and Microbiology.
Her early research experience in Toxicology at NIEHS and Burroughs Wellcome
provide a comprehensive understanding of the scientific method as applied
to research. Her first experience in clinical trials was obtained at
Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, at UNC Chapel Hill, where she
worked as a CRA in the challenging field of Bone Marrow Transplant and
Hematologic Malignancy. She joined Triangle Orthopedics Associates in 2002
as a study coordinator and is now the Manager of the Clinical Research
Department for the practice. There she manages both drug and device trials
and is therefore in a position to provide us with a unique perspective.
We wish to thank our SoCRA chapter member Carol Barmann for agreeing to be
the speaker for this meeting. Thank you Carol.
