Hello
Its been a while since I interacted with the Engineers in Biology and
Medicine group and in particular those wishing to apply their telecom
electronics and software skills to biology and medicine. The job
announcement below is a one of a kind opportunity to bridge the two fields.
Emerging technology products are outfitting first responders (fire fighters,
emergency workers, police, doctors, and other homeland security
professionals) with physiology measurement devices, wireless communications,
command centers, and environment monitoring devices.
I have been working with the staff at NIOSH for about four years and can
vouch for them. They are a top notch team. Also, participation in ANSI and
NFPA Standards Committees is an important avenue for influencing the safe
application of computing.
If you are interested, please contact Ron Shaeffer at the email below.
Sincerely yours,
Janet Flynt

Subject: Engineer Staff Position Available NIOSH-Pittsburgh
Janet,
We are seeking your help in identifying suitable candidates for an opening
at our laboratory in Pittsburgh, PA. This position is in the Technology
Branch, of the National Personal Protection Technology Laboratory (NPPTL).
NPPTL was founded in 2001 by the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention's (CDC) National Institute for Occupation Safety and Health
(NIOSH). The National laboratory focuses on the development and assessment
of new technologies for personal protective equipment (PPE). As part of a
strategic planning process, the laboratory has identified four scientific
research focus areas: fully-integrated, intelligent protective ensembles,
human performance, sensors, and respiratory protection.
We are seeking candidates to serve as a Research Engineer responsible for
the extensive application of the theories, principles, and practices of
engineering to design, develop, and evaluate integration and systems safety
strategies for PPE ensembles. Of particular interest is the need to develop
strategies and standards for the integration of electronic devices such as
environmental sensors, physiological sensors, communication systems, and
personal location systems into a fully-integrated ensemble for fire fighters
and emergency first responders. The candidate is expected to become an
active participant to our integrated ensembles team and a member of external
standards organizations such as the NFPA, ISO/ANSI, etc. The candidate will
be expected to collaborate in the preparation of technical reports and
manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals and make presentations
at seminars and conferences.
Qualifications:
- BS/MS Degree in Engineering (Ph.D. preferred).
- Experience in using a structured approach towards the integration of
electronic subsystems into a larger system for purposes of making the system
an intelligent device.
- Understanding of systems safety concepts applied to life critical
equipment
- Some knowledge of PPE subsystems such as respiratory protection devices,
protective clothing, physiological sensors, or environmental sensors used by
fire fighters and emergency first responders is desirable, but not required.
- Ability to communicate as demonstrated by technical reports,
presentations, patents, and manuscripts appearing in peer-reviewed journals.
Please forward any resumes or inquiries to me at the address below.
Best regards,
Ron Shaffer
