There will be a conference on Bioinformatics and biotechnology October
12-15 in RTP, sponsored by The Institute of Electrical and Electronics
Engineers (IEEE). The conference will have exhibits from vendors
(including the NC Department of Commerce), a keynote speech, tutorials,
presentations from invited speakers, presentations of papers, and a
student paper contest. The location is the NC Biotech Center. The
Eastern North Carolina Section of IEEE is planning this conference; we
are a strong supporter of biotechnology research and biomedical
engineering, because it is located in a hot bed of biotechnology and
medical resources. We believe that success in biotechnology research
requires a strong bioinformatics infrastructure. We have technical
co-sponsorship from IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society,
MCNC, and Duke University Medical Center.

Here are some of the confirmed talks which we will have:
- Opening Plenary Session Speakers: Secretary of State of NC, Elaine
Marshall and NC Biotech VP Business Development Dr. Ken Tindall
- Dan Reed, Kenan Eminent Professor at UNC and Director of the Institute
for Renaissance Computing will speak on educating for biotechnology, and
on his participation on the President's Information Technology Advisory
Committee. Dr. Reed is a member of the Biomedical Informatics Expert
Panel for the National Institute of Health's National Center for
Research Resources.
- Microarray Standards: Angel Pizarro, (MAGE)
- Panel on Genomics/Proteomics chaired by Joan Packenham, NIEHS
- Clinical Genomics Standards: Dr. Peter Elkin, MD
- HL7/CDISC: Dr. Barbara Tardiff
- Panel on Bioethics and Public Policy, chaired by Frank Ferrante
- Biotech in Outer Space: Stanly O. Starr, NASA Space Life Science Lab
- Telemedicine presentation by Linda Yoder, Uniformed Services Health
Sciences University (burn care)
- Tour of MCNC
- Tutorial on 21 CFR Part 11 for IT professionals
- Bioinformatics Tools and Technologies Panel Discussion, chaired by
Marilyn McClelland, NCCU and Gary Merrill, GSK

The range of topics for this conference is broad. We plan to include
HIPAA, bioethics, bioinformatics, telemedicine, infrastructure for
health and bioinformatics, grid computing, microarrays,
Genomic/Proteomic research tools, QA, standards and FDA regulations,
technology transfer, and e-records.

The website for the conference is http://ewh.ieee.org/cmte/tech4life/ .

Oct 12: half-day tutorials: $50 each
