Thursday May 19, Science and Math bldg room 162, Meredith College (Raleigh), 6 PM. Free.

Meredith College, IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society,
American Association of University Women Raleigh Branch, and IEEE Women
in Engineering are jointly sponsoring a presentation by the winners of the Team Prize in the 2004-5 Siemens-Westinghouse Competition in Math, Science and Technology.

This is a national contest for high school students. Light refreshments will be served at 6:00 p.m. and the meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m.

Lucie Guo and Xianlin Li, students at the North Carolina School of
Science and Mathematics in Durham who are graduating shortly, will speak
on their winning project and research methodology. The title of Ms. Guo
and Ms. Li's paper is "CpG island methylation of GADD45(alpha) is marker
of breast carcinogenesis". Ms. Guo and Ms. Li's genetics research
project examined the effect of a natural gene silencing process or
methylation on breast cancer. In their project the two students
demonstrated that breast cancer cell lines exhibit a specific pattern of
silent (methylation) sites in GADD45a, a prospective tumor-suppressor
gene. The methylation sites in the gene present potential new biomarkers
for personalized methods of early detection as well as treatment of
breast cancer, a critical step in the successful treatment of the
disease. An abstract of their paper (to be published in the journal
Oncogene) is available at
http://www.siemens-foundation.org/2004/Gtech/yueqi%20guo%20and%20xianlin%20li.html
.
The pair worked with Dr. Wei Wang in Dr. Jeffrey Marks' lab at Duke. Ms
Guo and Ms Li have been interviewed by NPR and MSNBC, and have been
personally congratulated by Governor Easley.
