Featured Topic: Electronic Health Records and the National Health
Information Network - A Progress Report
The IEEE-USA advocates transitioning from our current hodge-podge of
health information systems to a National Health Information Network
(NHIN) that would make use of leading-edge networking technologies, such
as web services, mobile communications, and multimedia communications to
provide secure and reliable transport of healthcare information.
Potential benefits include reducing the number of medical errors,
restraining the rising cost of healthcare, and accelerating the adoption
and standardization of the Electronic Health Record (EHR). Legislation
is currently pending in Congress which would fund and promote the
development of NHIN and EHR. The IEEE-USA Medical Technology Policy
Committee (MTPC) is currently working on a series of position statements
in support of this legislation. The purpose of this presentation is to
provide a progress report on these activities, and to discuss some of
the interoperability issues involved in making medical information
available ubiquitously and securely.
Thomas Jepsen is an IT consultant and chair of the Engineering in
Medicine and Biology Society of the IEEE Eastern North Carolina Section.
He is a corresponding member of the IEEE-USA Medical Technology Policy
Committee, and chair of its Interoperability Working Group.
best regards

NOTE: look for T.W. Alexander Drive, 27709 in online mapping programs -
there is a completely different Alexander drive in a different zipcode
in Durham.
