*American Health Information Community (the Community) Workgroups *

On September 13, 2005, Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Mike
Leavitt announced the membership for the American Health Information
Community (the Community). The Community was formed to help advance
efforts to reach President Bush’s call for most Americans to have
electronic health records within ten years. The Community is a
federally-chartered commission and provides input and recommendations to
HHS on how to make health records digital and interoperable, and assure
that the privacy and security of those records are protected, in a
smooth, market-led way.

To access the web page for the Community please go to:
www.hhs.gov/healthit/ahic.html <http://www.hhs.gov/healthit/ahic.html>

The Community decided at its November 29, 2005 meeting to form
workgroups in the following areas: biosurveillance
<http://www.hsrnet.net/ONC/workgroups/bio_main.htm>, consumer
empowerment <http://www.hsrnet.net/ONC/workgroups/ce_main.htm>, chronic
care <http://www.hsrnet.net/ONC/workgroups/cc_main.htm>, and electronic
health records <http://www.hsrnet.net/ONC/workgroups/ehr_main.htm>.
These workgroups will make recommendations to the Community that will
produce tangible and specific value to the health care consumer that can
be realized within a one-year period.

These workgroups are scheduled to meet approximately 10 times per year,
each. Members of the public will have the ability to listen in on the
meetings via the Web. Details on how to access each work group meeting
are available under that work group’s page of this Web site. The public
will have the opportunity to submit public comment at the end of each
meeting. The Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT will
provide a conference room in Washington, D.C. at the Department of
Health and Human Services where the public can attend to listen to the
conference calls. Advance registration is not required for these meetings.

The first workgroup meetings will be held from *1 to 5 p.m. on January
30, January 31, February 1, and February 2 of 2006*. The agendas for
