O'Brien/Atkins
and
*Mr. Timothy Winstead*
AIA, principal, director of science and technology
The Freelon Group

The speakers will discuss designing the Biomanufacturing Research Institute
& Technology Enterprise (BRITE) Center for Excellence, which is located at
North Carolina Central University in Durham. It is part of the statewide
initiative to make North Carolina a premiere provider of skilled workers for
the biotechnology industry. BRITE is one segment of the comprehensive
training effort. The BRITE Center will provide laboratories for scholars
conducting research in several areas critical to biotechnology and
biomanufacturing.

Dudley Lacy is the chief operating officer of O'Brien/Atkins Associates, the
architect-of-record for both the BTEC project at North Carolina State
University and the BRITE project at North Carolina Central University. When
completed, both BRITE and BTEC will make significant contributions to
positioning North Carolina as a desirable location for the production of the
life sciences industry.

Dudley was an active member of the engineering committee of the
Biomanufacturing Pharmaceutical Training Consortium and worked closely with
North Carolina's biopharmaceutical industry, NC State, NCCU and the
Community College system to develop the curriculum, facility needs and
funding requirements for the BTEC and BRITE projects. After receiving his
Bachelor's degree in History from Duke University and his Masters in
Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania, he has spent the past
twenty-eight years practicing architecture, focusing the past fifteen years
on projects for advanced technology companies including: Biogen Idec, Eisai,
GlaxoSmithKline, Metrics and Icoria.

Tim Winstead, AIA joined the Freelon Group in 2002 as principal and director
of science and technology. A native North Carolinian, he graduated from NC
State with a Bachelor of Environmental Design in Architecture in 1981. Over
the past twenty-five years, Mr. Winstead has been responsible for the design
of a variety of architectural projects with a particular emphasis on
programming, planning and design of Science and Technology facilities. His
project experience has included both public and private buildings, most
notably university and corporate research facilities. Mr. Winstead is
serving as lead planner on many of the firm's science projects, including
facilities for North Carolina Central University, NC State University, Yale
University, Elizabeth City State University and three new undergraduate
science centers at Fayetteville State, NC Central University, and NC A&T
State University.

As one of the leading programmers and planners for lab facilities in the
country, Mr. Winstead has been actively involved in Project Kaleidoscope and
recently presented at the Summer PKAL conference to address issues of
renovations to accommodate new teaching pedagogies in science facilities.
Mr. Winstead has also been a frequent speaker at national conferences,
including numerous Tradelines, SCUP, ISPE and Agile Planner conferences.
