Speaker: Karla Jacobus - Director, Development Planning and Program
Management, PPD

Karla Jacobus, RN, MS, Director, Product Development has been in the
pharmaceutical industry for over 18 years, having worked in both large
and small pharmaceutical companies. During her time at PPD Ms. Jacobus
has been instrumental in the management of full drug development
programs and regulatory submissions. She has continued to use her
teaching abilities to mentor and train new drug development leadership
and support staff. Before coming to PPD she had responsibility for all
clinical activities at a small venture capital-funded company, as well
as helping to conceptualize, write and coordinate the process for patent
prosecution and maintenance with external patent counsel. Additionally,
Ms. Jacobus has given numerous presentations to medical professionals at
various national conferences. Prior to this, Ms. Jacobus worked in the
Pulmonary/Critical Care Clinical Department at Burroughs Wellcome as a
Clinical Scientist, working in various therapeutic areas and stages of
development. She also participated on a long-term international task
force to establish global guidelines for the collecting and reporting of
data. Before joining the pharmaceutical industry, Ms. Jacobus spent nine
years in the hospital critical care clinical setting, developing an
expertise in cardiac and pulmonary problems, including mechanical
ventilation. She worked as a staff nurse and as a staff development
instructor, where she was responsible for classroom and clinical
instruction, orientation of new staff, and continuing education for an
adult ICU and step-down unit. She also held a faculty position for
education of nursing students at the baccalaureate level. She is an
active member of the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses, DIA,
and RAPS.
