DR. JEFFERY ENGEL

Dr. Engel is the State Epidemiologist and Chief of the Epidemiology
Section of the Division of Public Health, NC Department of Health and
Human Services.  He leads the branches of Communicable Disease
Control, Occupational and Environmental Epidemiology, the State
Laboratory of Public Health, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner,
and the Office of Public Health Preparedness and Response.  As State
Epidemiologist, Dr. Engel serves as a liaison at the state level to
the local health departments and to the federal Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention.



>From 1988-2002, Dr. Engel was on the faculty at the Brody School of
Medicine at East Carolina University in Greenville, NC where he
attained the rank of Professor of Medicine, served as Chief of the
Division of Infectious Diseases, and Medical Director of Hospital
Infection Control for Pitt County Memorial Hospital.  He received his
undergraduate and medical degrees from the Johns Hopkins University in
Baltimore and did his residency, chief residency, and fellowship
training at the University of Minnesota and the Minneapolis Veterans
Administration Medical Center from 1981-88.  He is Board Certified in
Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases.  In 2005, he was appointed
to the CDC's Healthcare Infection Control Practices Advisory Committee
by Secretary of Health and Human Services Michael Levitt; and in 2008,
he was appointed to the National Biosurveillance Advisory Subcommittee
to the CDC Director.
