When GSK predecessor Burroughs Wellcome moved to RTP in 1971 and Glaxo
arrived in 1983, they could not have foreseen the mutually beneficial
relationship that would develop between the region and the growing
biotechnology industry. Two mergers later, GSK today is the second-largest
pharmaceutical company in the world with 53 buildings on 814 acres and 5,000
employees in RTP and 800 employees in a world-class manufacturing facility
in Zebulon.

skilled new jobs when it opens in 2012 and have the capacity to manufacture
150 million doses of pandemic vaccine within six months of a pandemic flu
declaration.
