The Eastern North Carolina chapter of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine 
and Biology Society, the ENCS chapter of the Robotics and Automation 
Society, and the Women in Engineering Affinity Group, are pleased to 
jointly sponsor a presentation on "The Building Blocks of Regulation" by 
Arthur A. Ciarkowski, Adjunct Professor of Surgery, University of 
Pittsburgh.  This presentation discusses the U.S. Food and Drug 
Administration's role in the regulation of medical devices and 
healthcare products.  Arthur Ciarkowski is the former Associate 
Director, DCD, at the FDA's Center for Devices and Radiological Health.

Featured Topic: The Building Blocks of Regulation

Arthur Ciarkowski will address regulated products and regulatory 
concepts in his presentation, and give a short history of regulation. 
He will discuss risk assessment and management, regulatory mechanisms, 
and the medical device life cycle. Changes in healthcare will be 
presented, along with device industry growth by specialty, shifts in 
risks, and the impact of home healthcare.


Speaker: Arthur A. Ciarkowski, AIMBE

Arthur A. Ciarkowski is the Adjunct Professor of Surgery, School of 
Medicine, Department of Surgery, at the University of Pittsburgh. He is 
the former Associate Director, DCD, at the FDA's Center for Devices and 
Radiological Health, and a Fellow of the American Institute of Medical 
and Biological Engineering (AIMBE).  He is a member of the IEEE-USA 
Medical Technology Policy Committee.
