Realizing we are in the situation described in the George Booth cartoon:http://www.cartoonbank.com/product_details.asp?sid=44908
Hope you will also keep in mind education needs (I have heard there will be high school classes with 35 students next year -- a lot of classrooms barely hold 30 students, and classroom management challenges go up exponentially with number of students. Obviously it would help to cut more central office staff -- most of the dead wood is usually in the crown of the tree! -- but I don't think we can make the cuts envisioned without affecting classrooms) and the environment.
Regards, pat

Subject: [Durham INC] Court Resources
I am posting the following on behalf of the PAC3 facilitators. Please
join them in contacting the Durham Delegation to ensure that the needs of our
court system are addressed.
Thanks.

Dear PAC Members,
We have all worked diligently these past few years to address the needs of a
court system that has not kept pace with the demands placed upon it.
We know this year is a difficult one financially, and we fear that next year
may be equally challenging. With that in mind, we all need to express our
concerns about the impact of the current cutbacks on our court system to the
members of the Durham Delegation. Our city and county governments have
generously stepped up over the past few years to fund two assistant district
attorneys, one public defender, and a stand alone domestic violence court which
convenes Monday through Thursday of every week. With the current economic
crisis, we doubt they will be able to continue this funding. We desperately
need the Durham Delegation to appropriate the necessary state funds to maintain
these positions and this court.
Specifically, our chief concerns are:
• Elimination of emergency judges and the freeze on existing vacancies
• Office supplies cutbacks
• Elimination of NCAWARE rollout and other technological upgrades
When contacting Delegation members, be sure to let them know that we recognize
and appreciate all that they have done and continue to do for Durham. We
desperately need their continued support to keep the citizens of Durham safe.
