  Dear Brothers of the Raleigh alumni chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.:

  Thank you so much for allowing me to speak to you at your Sunday chapter meeting about the importance of donating blood.  I’m excited that we will be able to work together in the future for your chapter (and loved ones) to come in and donate.  It’s going to be a great event!

  I am so thankful for those donations, and wanted to let you know that you can also come in before that time to donate on an individual basis.  The American Red Cross and thousands of patients need you and others to give blood right away!   Currently, there is less than a 2-day supply of 4 different blood types, which are used extensively in emergency rooms -- and the number of patients who need blood is as high as ever.  We ask that you come into one of our Raleigh area Blood Donation Centers and give blood.  To make an appointment, please call 1-800-GIVE LIFE (448-3543) or visit www.givelife.org. 

  (We’re even open on Memorial Day!  The need for blood doesn’t take a vacation!  What a great way to enjoy a day off – help to save 3 lives!)

  If you come in and donate between May 28 and June 1, you can donate again between July 23 and 27 and you will be eligible again for your chapter drive: September 17 and 21!!!!  You can all start donating every 8 weeks, so there will be more than one brother with his hand up, next time I ask “Who donates every 8 weeks?!” 

  We have some great give-aways going on now!  In May, all presenting donors will be able to enter to win a trip to Disney World!  This trip includes a 3-night stay at The Clarion Hotel, dinner for 4 at Planet Hollywood, 4 Delta Air Lines round-trip tickets, and 4 tickets to Disney World! If you come in to donate May 24-29, you will also receive an American Red Cross mesh tote bag. In June, all presenting donors will be able to enter to win one of two $750 gas cards (You can’t beat that when gas is $3/gallon!!!)

  I have attached 2 different documents that have very pertinent information about the increasingly important need for African-American blood donations.  We, as African-Americans, sometimes have rare blood types that only other African-Americans have.  If those of us with rare blood types do not donate, there will not be blood for those that have the same rare blood types.  Caucasians, Hispanics, Asians, and other ethnicities do not have this same blood.  It is imperative that we all donate blood in order to help the African-American community.  And even if we do not have rare blood types, it is important for us to donate to help keep American strong!

  Did you know that your one donation can help to save up to 3 lives?  There is no substitute for human blood, so patients depend on generous donors like you every single day to survive!  To make an appointment, please call 1-800-GIVE LIFE (448-3543) or visit www.givelife.org.  You can also walk-in to our centers.  We invite you to bring a friend, co-worker, neighbor, family member or other associate to donate with you.  Please be sure to pass this information and need along to any family, friends, co-workers, or other associates who might be interested in helping others and entering to win a great trip or gas card!
