Dear Friends,

Below is an invitation to a new inter-campus and community-wide event organized by the students of Lambda Pi Eta, the undergraduate honors society in communication at NC State University.

The program, featuring brief presentations by several NCSU faculty followed by open discussion on the topic, should be both lively and thought-provoking.

Please join us and help the "Issues Forum" get off the ground.

Regards,

Steve Wiley

(Apologies for any cross-posts)

The Beta Chapter of Lambda Pi Eta (the National Communication Honors Society) will be hosting its first-ever Issues Forum on Monday, September 16
from 7:30-9:00pm in Caldwell Lounge (directions below).

Tonight's topic is "Gender, Rhetoric & Technolgy."

Dr. Carolyn Miller (http://www4.ncsu.edu:8030/~crm/), professor of English at NC State, will speak about the rhetoric of technology, online chatterbots, and ethos.

Dr. T.L. Taylor (http://social.chass.ncsu.edu/~ttaylor/), whose recent work has examined the online phenomenon of Everquest
(http://www.ncsu.edu/news/press_releases/02_08/198.htm), will speak about the ways in which identity and gender collide in a virtual environment. Dr. Taylor is an assistant professor of Communication at NC State.

Other panelists TBA.

Based on an idea by Dr. Herbert Simons, professor of speech and rhetoric at Temple University (http://www.temple.edu/tif), Issue Forumss provide a much-needed space on campus where students, faculty, and members of the community can come together (as schedules permit) for 1-2 hours per month for
discussion, debate, and interactive learning in a comfortable, non-competitive setting. Our goal is to provide a space where people (who may not necessarily have the chance to otherwise interact with one another)
can come together outside of the classroom to form a collegial community of discourse that examines contemporary social problems and current events/news.

Each month's IF will be centered around a particular topic, chosen by the IF planning committee. Faculty and members of the surrounding university community whose research and/or expertise fit that topic will be invited to share their insights/findings/opinions with one another and with the group.

Please join us for an evening of collegial discussion and cultural inquiry, and feel free to forward this message to those whom you believe may be interested in attending this event.

Sincerely,

Cindy Spurlock
