I thought you might be interested in my response. Please note that Douglas
Dumont and Eddie Shanken will describe Duke's work with Rogers Herr Middle
School at the conference May 30 (see http://www.rtpnet.org/rtpconf/ ).

John,

I meant to reply sooner. I hadn't thought about it exactly like this, but
RTPnet is working with local public schools in several ways.

(1) One of our CTC VISTA projects that I'm most proud of has been the
development of an after school program for 6th graders to ensure that the
students will be able to pass NC's computer competency test. The
curriculum will be online by the end of this month and we will start
promoting the program then. Duke University has led this project (it was a
student's idea, students teach the classes, faculty and staff provide
office space and financial support, and our VISTA (Douglas Dumont) is a
2002 Duke graduate. RTPnet is working with Duke now to find a VISTA to
continue the program next year. We hope to expand to additionals schools
and help UNC-Chapel Hill reactivate its program. For more information, see
http://www.rtpnet.org/rtpnet/vista.shtml , which has a link to Douglas'
workplan.

(2) We have a tech support e-mail list
http://www.rtpnet.org/mailman/listinfo/rtpnet-tech
Requests for help are usually answered by one of more volunteers, as
you'll see in the list's archive. The list is NOT just for schools. It's
for anybody.

(3) We've also worked with schools' technology people who are trying to
get children's parents using computers and the Internet. Chapel
Hill-Carrboro City Schools is a member of RTPnet. They gave a presentation
at last year's conference on how they are making the Internet available to
families in their homes, using Citrix servers. See their presentation at
http://www.rtpnet.org/rtpnet/rtpconf02/ray/ .
And RTPnet volunteers taught classes for parents, working with the
school's "Community Alliance for Student Success." See
