Mike, does the Rural Internet Access Authority seem like a group to touch
base with (at least study their web site)? I think they have information
about NC ISP's and their offerings. Oh, looks like spectacular weather
today. Enjoy.... Ed Wesolowski

Dear fellow campers,

Are we happy? I think we are. Things are moving ahead.
Mark Smith has done some spade work on costs for DSL and cable and
on networking through building wiring (and eventually out to the internet
that way at high speed). He has made his initial contribution.

Ed Weslowski has volunteered to chat up the NC Justice Center on
their IT operations and to get to some other nonprofits.
I have suggested that in doing this he work along the lines of this
protocol:

Also: we want to get to orgs that are not hosted at RTPnet and to
find out:
Do they have a www site?
What additional features does it offer (e.g. listserves, storage
(quantity))
What do they like about it? (the service, not the www pages)
What would they like to be different?
What are they paying for it (convert all responses to an annual basis).

applying it to half a dozen orgs if he can.

Is one of you up for doing a little web search on offering prices for web
service from commercial vendors? It would be good if we could set prices
from several indigenous to the triangle as well as those from anywhere in
web land.

Would another of you look for position papers, white papers, etc.
pontificating on the future of the web and access to it, especially if they
mention speeds and costs. Horizon: 2-5 years or whatever you can get your
hands on.

If you will take one of these on, reply to the list so we know who's doing
what and don't walk on each other's toes.

With some data on these topics I'll try to put together a short report to
share, bringing in all comments to date; then we can see about next steps.

Best,
