Introduction of Staff and Board
Executive Director - Overview of Strategic Plan & Accomplishments
Agenda and meeting packet outline main accomplishments against
the strategic plan - see for details
CTCNet Board & Members
Resources Funding, Tools
Funding - Have made some inroads into funding but what are the
concerns?
* Dan MacNeil - how come we have conferences in expensive hotels
and not cheap college campuses
* Steve Ronan - very open to the possibilities, not much of a
difference in terms
* Tony Streit - any member encouraged to join any committee at
any time
* Michael Roberts - what is the future funding of LDI?
* Kavita Singh - have requested several entities to funds there
are two open requests one of which is to HP - LDI and regional
chapter development - also State Farm Bank
* Richard Jay - LDI - would encourage something for youth
development
* Stan Pokras - looking to serve various aims in raising money.
Will board help develop a strategy to help coordinate and not
have competing interests
* David Keyes - one of the things we need to start to write into
affiliation agreements to help share contacts and when national
is going after funding and coordinate that information and not
compete
* Carl Davidson - we have those who working against us and have
different agendas and are fighting against us. We need chapters
that can help us organize and present a united front as a way to
strengthen us. This will help us.
* Tim Barclay - MoveOn.org is a good model that allows people to
send support messages and facilitate lobbying
* Fred Flemming - Article in Newsweek about there is not digital
divide. Just took $735M out of 21st Century Learning Program.
We need to come up with the national message and response to this
Tools
George Gundry - archives or mailing list need to be full text
searchable and directory online needs to be updated and include
more information about their programs and services
Kavita Singh - the discussion has been happening and Steve Ronan
is working on it. We are revisiting membership information and
how to better represent it on the website
Felicia Davis - some discussion about who should come to these
centers. Would like to have some information about who is the
target audience and who would benefit most for the various
information.
Expansion - Offices, Regional Updates
Concerns about expansion of CTCNet to the various regions and
regional development.
* Catherine Settani - convene a one or two day conference
mid-year to talk about regional development
* Ric Estrada - we make sure that we have the right
infrastructure to support the many different chapters that may
arise. We need to be very clear about the communication
structures. Would like to be on a chapter subcommittee to
development cross communication structures
* Judy Hallman - would like to have stronger partnership
agreements
* Michelene Willcoxen - how will we do it from a state, local and
national entities. For example CA has 4 local organizations
* Mercedes Soto - the CTCs should build their networks and
communication
* Claire Murray - we shouldn't use region and chapter
interchangeably and be more specific
* Bill Callahan - confused about what the intention is. OCCN is
already organized and raising money
* Mercedes Soto - the regional items will be posted online
* Vivian Tomoocho??? - looking for tools that can be built into
chapters and peer knowledge network tools
* John Zoltner - we know that we need shared tools and looking
how to how to very familiar with Open ACS
* Kavita Singh - looking to reorganize the site and presenting
information
* Mercedes Soto - existing networks and existing coalitions is
one part of the process. However an existing group might want to
become a CTCNet affiliated partner
* Jemeul Johnson - as CTCNet moves forward would like see how we
actually present the infrastructure to share information NOTE:
tap him and Vivian to work in a subcommittee to work on this.
NOTE: we need to develop new tools and mechanism for managing
our information and resources
Reach - Policy, Community Networks, Media, Partnerships
Policy - The policy committee has had very active affiliate
involvement
* Felicia Davis - what are the next steps for future specific
lobby days? Will there be online advocacy days? We will have a
continual effort on the policy site.
* John Zoltner - Members are coming to the hill and CTCNet goes
with them to the hill. Keep that going. The other thing is that
we need to have events in DC on a regular basis and not sure what
that looks like. CA and IL tech and advocacy days and another
reason for state and local chapter work.
* Shireen Mitchell - will commit to do online techno activism.
* Layton Olson - may want to think about Feb when the budget
comes out. If regions can plan early in the year and regional
entities mobilize
* George Gundry - in CA involved in the statewide group and in SF
working with cable access. It is tiresome. Would like to see
CTCNet support local and statewide work. Sharing best practices.
Would like to see the national speak for me. Look to you guys to
write Newsweek back. Would like national to be very strategic
and targeted in asking for our support
* Bruce Buckalue?? - feels like he is not very effective on the
national level, but needs to have a voice. CTCNet needs to play
that voice. We need to have voices that support the poor and
disenfranchised. Need to mobilize and integrate civic activism,
etc.
* David Keyes - there is a CTCNet policy framework which will
serve as the guide for our policy work. Please send comments and
suggestions for working changes. Will be posted on the website.
Feedback will be folded in and voted on. There is relationship
building and action. We really need to find the relationships
and base needs to support and communicate that.
* Richard Lowenberg / Andrew Cohill - AFCN is very interested in
discussion about partnership. Joint membership. Tools, reduced
fees, combined work. Looking to solidify. Have an open source
award to help develop tools that would benefit CTCs and expand
their ability to offer.
* Randall Pinkett - would like to support the building of
networks and formal partnerships. Need leadership to build the
bridges and demonstrate the potential to build those network.
It is the national organization's role to do that.
* Ken Wyrick - the technology can help fuel what we are doing and
how we develop resources and to share information NOTE: we need
a technology committee. Ken is willing to do this.
* Fred Flemming - making a basic error. Policy needs to be made
at home. We must work at home to talk to our constituencies.
We must work. Somewhere between libraries and schools and we
must explain why it is important.
* David Keyes - we should have a technology committee?
* Judy Hallman - we have people who want to work and develop this
and we have some folks interested in service learning
* Ken Wyrick - Cnet is developing tools and infrastructure that
will deal with broadband applications that are beyond what we
think of..
* Randall Pinkett - NPTEN provides tech assistance to NPOs and
getting very deep and building applications for CTCs that are
vertical. Open Source, NPTEN
* Steve Rockwell - simplify, make it easy for your constituents
* Shireen Mitchell - need more direct service agencies at the
meetings
* Leonard MacNeil - do we have a marketing, outreach, media
* Steve Wright - we have created a media creation platform, and
we have the potential to create a national voice and publishing
platform and facilitate that process
* Jemeul Johnson - we need to look at where policy, media,
networking and political activism overlap. Needs a brand
identity. The national ad counsel would probably be part of
this. We have a network of public broadcasting and a way to
mobilize people. Need to simplify the message and propagate the
airwaves with our message. Need to create the environment to
link all of us to link together.
* Felicia Davis - we need to move into policy
* Tim Barclay - It is easiest to protest, and that is worthwhile,
but the need to be positive be positive steps that are also
pursued (e.g. registering voters, education local elective state
and national representatives about what an important place CTCs
hold.)
Identity - membership, what is a ctc?
* Mercedes Soto - we have had the discussion about what is an
affiliate? CTCNet was a network of places where people could go
to get access and training to technology.
* Erroll Reese - we want to understand how you identify yourself
* Zenobia
* Shireen Mitchell - if you have a mobile lab and provide
services are you a center? If you provide training and resources
and other CTCs
* Erroll Reese - this is a growth problem, pardon our growth
problem
