To TACT list:
Although several people expressed interest in working on the Community
Technology (CT) LinkUp project as an Americorps*VISTA and we interviewed
several promising candidates, for a variey of reasons, none took the job.
The main goal of the project is to develop and implement the CT LinkUp
project, focusing on Chapel Hill-Carrboro community technology centers.
The workplan is at http://www.rtpnet.org/tact/jobinfo/ct-linkup.html
I'm disappointed that we don't have a VISTA to do the work. I think this
would have been a perfect use of the grant we received from the Chapel of
the Cross (see our proposal at
http://www.rtpnet.org/gather/proposals/cofthec/ ) and it would
pave the way for RTPnet to enlist the support of other faith-based
organizations in North Carolina to provide similar services throughout
North Carolina.
Christina Burbeck and I plan to continue work on this project, as time
allows. There are many community technology centers and support
organizations in Chapel Hill-Carrboro. To give you an idea, here is the
first part of the workplan:
Objective 1: Establish contacts with community technology centers and
support organizations and identify resources and needs.
Find contact information for community technology centers and support
organizations in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro area, such as Airport
Gardens Community Center, Hargraves Technology Center, Orange County
Skills Development/JobLink Center, Pine Knolls Community
Center, South Estes Family Resource Center, Trinity Court Family
Resource Center, Chapel Hill Police Department (drug elimination
program), Chapel Hill Housing Department, Chapel Hill Training
Outreach-Family Resource Centers, Good Work, Joint Orange Chatham
Community Action Agency, Orange County Department of Social Services,
Orange County Literacy Council, Chapel Hill-Carrboro City
Schools, the Inter-Faith Council for Social Service, Triangle United
Way, Orange County Youth Web Site, UNC-Chapel Hill (Campus Y,
Center for Public Service, Employee Forum, University Managers
Association, APPLES, student organizations), Durham Technical
Community College, YMCA, Chapel Hill Senior Center, Carrboro Senior
Center, Retired Senior Volunteer Program, El Pueblo, the libraries,
The Chapel of the Cross, St. Paul A. M. E. Church, and other
faith-based organizations, and Triangle Internet Workers.
So, work on this project will continue, but probably a little more slowly.
