Hi all,

The season opener of Extreme Home Makeover, to be shown by ABC this Sunday,
September 17, features a New Jersey family whose search for assistive
technology tools was facilitated by TECHConnection, our ATA Center in
Shrewsbury, NJ.

Joanne Castellano at TECHConnection (www.techconnection.org) was contacted
by LaDeana Huyler, National Manager of the Microsoft Accessibility Resource
Center (MARC) project, in which many ATA Centers participate. TECHConnection
staff worked with program staff and consulted on the assistive technology
provided to the Llane family as part of the makeover, which included
iCommunicator, Zoomtext, portable magnifiers, color detectors, Click Pocket
Money Brailler, and wireless GPS systems.

While we have not had the opportunity to preview it, we anticipate that this
program will increase the awareness level of assistive technology and its
potential for a mainstream audience. We anticipate a spike in requests for
information and referral to the ATA office and members as well quite
possible as CTCNet members. Both Microsoft and Hewlett-Packard, who are
sponsors, anticipate a large volume of calls and emails. They will be
referring many of those requests on to us and our networks. Should you
receive a request and wish some support in responding to it, please do not
hesitate to contact me directly at russholland at ATAccess.org.

The house has been dubbed the "Z-Home" because it goes beyond extreme for
all of its technology innovations. The show will be hosted by Marlee Matlin
who is an actress that is deaf.
