GEORGIA COLLEGE & STATE UNIVERSITY ARCHIVIST
Looking for a career in Archival Management? Seeking a position that offers
positive mentoring with an experienced archives staff? Georgia College &
State University has a unique opportunity for a talented and innovative
individual seeking in-depth experience with digital projects and provision
of primary source research assistance to the GCSU and wider research
communities. The Georgia College collections are broad in scope and
significance; in addition to the papers of scholars and creative artists of
local importance and the Paul D. Coverdell papers (Georgia State Senate, U.
S. Peace Corps, and U. S. Senate), the department also hold the papers of
the world renowned author, Flannery O'Connor.
Responsibilities: Assists in the development and evaluation of Special
Collections services, collections and programs; provides leadership as the
University Archives coordinator; identifies, acquires and processes
university archives, manuscripts, books and materials in other formats
relating to the mission of the university; provides specialized
reference/research services for the department; organizes, catalogs, and
describes holdings in all formats, creating MARC, EAD and web-based
descriptive records; holds primary responsibility for production of the
department's digital projects; evaluates the preservation needs of the
collections; promotes the use of collections by students, faculty, and
scholars through instruction, exhibits, publications and other means;
participates in general reference/research services for the
campus/community; initiates/supports outreach, liaison and marketing
programs; participates on LITC and university committees. This position will
include some evening and weekend hours.
Qualifications: ALA-accredited or Georgia BOR-approved MLS/MLIS or Master's
degree in relevant field. Minimum one year experience in archives/special
collections. Subject expertise in 20th-century American literature or
southern history/politics. Demonstrated success in processing, arrangement
and description of historical records and manuscripts. Experience in
integration of technology with archival practice. Experience in
reference/research services. Instruction experience in the use of primary
source materials. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Ability
to lift heavy items that may weigh 40+ pounds. Ability to work independently
as well as within a team environment, to take initiative, and to follow
through with all responsibilities and assigned tasks. Ability to work with a
diverse clientele. Demonstrated analytical and organizational skills.
Commitment to professional growth and development. Potential to meet
academic rank and tenure requirements. Preferred: Experience with MARC and
EAD cataloging. ACA certification.
Rank and Salary: 12-month tenure track appointment. Salary and faculty rank
commensurate with qualifications and experience. Competitive benefits
