Thank you all for your responses.  I also heard from some people directly.  Consensus = unbound. There might be an archival slogan in there somewhere.

At UNC Charlotte we have bound and unbound catalogs (until the paper stopped) and student newspapers. Since these are not on public shelves we now prefer unbound. It is much easier to photocopy newspaper articles when they are not bound. In the future if we can scan these publications I agree with Jan-they will be much easier to scan.

At Davidson, the preference is unbound and where we have bound volumes, we try to get unbound ones for the permanent collection.   We lost a lot of data about local businesses when a student magazine was bound - they took off the covers with all the advertisements.  (I know that not all binders would do that but it's much easier to scan from unbound copies as well.

Hello -
I am asking if anyone can share their bindery policy with me for their unique/archival publications.  It may depend on budget, too, but from a preservation standpoint, is it better to have bound publications such as university catalogs, or should they remain as close to the original as possible, and therefore unbound? Also, if you have a bound set, do you maintain an unbound set for that title as well?
