Hi Volunteers for the American Tobacco Trail,
This is to remind you of our American Tobacco Trail workday, *Saturday,
April 29*, on the American Tobacco Trail at the White Oak Church Road
Trailhead <http://www.triangletrails.org/DIRECTIONS.HTM> at 9 a.m.
Please join us,* Saturday, April 8* at 9 a.m. at the White Oak Church
Road Trailhead <http://www.triangletrails.org/DIRECTIONS.HTM> in Wake
County. Scroll down the page to find the directions. Note, there may be
a shorter way to get to this trailhead from Cary, but the roads are
under construction in this area so our directions read from NC 751.
Also note, that if you arrive after 9:10 or so, the work group may have
driven over to the Green Level Church Road trail intersection in order
to save about a ten minute walk down the trail with gear. To get to
Green Level Church Road from the parking area, drive out of the parking
area, turn right, go to the T intersection of Green Level Church Road,
turn right, go about 1/4 mile, past Farrell Road on your left. Park on
the shoulder of Green Level Church Road. Please be careful because there
is an increasing amout of traffic on this road. If you prefer, feel free
to park on Farrell Road if you like.
Our main focus will be to clear and clean this next phase of the Wake
County portion of the ATT of brush, downed trees, overhanging branches,
trash and junk. We'll be clearing and cleaning the adjoining drainage
ditches and trail itself on this section of the trail that is hoped to
be under construction this summer.
At this writing, the weather on Saturday is calling for potential
showers. If it is rainy or worse on Saturday, we will have a limited
workday that would end before noon. Or we may have none at all. Please
use your best judgment to determine if you want to be working outside in
rainy conditions.
Because of the marginal weather on Saturday, *we'll also hold a workday
on this same section on Sunday afternoon* starting at *1 p.m.* If you
can, please join us then as well or instead. You can come out anytime on
Sunday afternoon before 5 or so, if you'd like. We can use the help!
Bring work gloves, full shoes or boots, clothing appropriate for the
weather, water and a snack if you like.* *You will need to sign a waiver
and participation list.
While you don't have to bring any tools because we'll mainly need
"haulers and toters", we do have a wish list of tools if you'd like to
bring them.
Feel free to bring a small hand pruning saw if you like. Loppers are
always needed as well. Also, a wheelbarrow is always handy if you can
haul it to the site.
We will be doing some chainsaw work that day. For the safety of all, we
separate the chainsawyers and their small assistance crews from everyone
else. If you have a chainsaw, are trained or know how to use it, and
have full protective gear including helmet, eye protection, hearing
protection, chaps and appropriate boots, feel free to bring it.
Also, we really need one or more pole saws to reach overhanging limbs.
If you have one and care to bring and use it, please do so.
We'll probably work till about noon or so. If you can work later, that
would be great too!
If it is raining badly or all over the area, we'll cancel this workday.
However, I plan on working at least a little if it is anything short of
a widespread hard rain. Feel free to call Bill Bussey at 919 545-9104,
as late as 8 a.m., to verify a go or no go. However, if you aren't
comfortable with the forecast, use your best judgment and join us or not
as you prefer.
We will be working Sunday afternoon starting at 1 p.m. Meeting
arrangements are the same as the Saturday workday. If you can please let
Bill Bussey <mailto:billbus at gte.net> know if you are interested in
working on Sunday afternoons. Else, just show up.
Please let Curt Devereux <mailto:devereux at gte.net> 919 919 544-3948
