Hi Volunteers for the American Tobacco Trail,
This late message is to remind you of our American Tobacco Trail
workday,* tomorrow, **Saturday, May 13*, on the American Tobacco Trail
at the White Oak Church Road Trailhead
<http://www.triangletrails.org/DIRECTIONS.HTM> at 9 a.m.
Please join us,* Saturday, May 13* at 9 a.m. at the White Oak Church
Road Trailhead <http://www.triangletrails.org/DIRECTIONS.HTM> in Wake
County. Scroll down the page to find the directions. Note, there may be
a shorter way to get to this trailhead from Cary, but the roads are
under construction in this area so our directions read from NC 751.
We'll also be working on *Sunday, May 14, same place, at 1 p.m.* Bring
your Mom!
We'll be working on the trail north of the trailhead. If you arrive
after about 9:10 or so, please go around the gate at the end of the open
trail, and follow the cleared trail north till you see us.
Our main focus will be to clear and clean this next phase of the Wake
County portion of the ATT of brush, downed trees, overhanging branches,
trash and junk. We'll be clearing and cleaning the adjoining drainage
ditches and trail itself on this section of the trail that is hoped to
be under construction this summer.
Last week, we had about 20 folks, including twelve from the National
Charity League, come out and join us on a beautiful Saturday. Steve Lund
came out with his chainsaw so we were able to do a lot of the heavier
work needed. We made a lot of progress. We are well on our way to
clearing this section. However, we still have about a kilometer to go.
This upcoming section is arguably among the prettiest section's of the
entire trail, but will also be about the toughest to clean and clear.
*We do need your help!*
Bring work gloves, full shoes or boots, clothing appropriate for the
weather, water and a snack if you like.* *Be prepared for ticks and
poison ivy.We suggest long pants and even light long sleeves. You will
need to sign a waiver and participation list.
While you don't have to bring any tools because we'll mainly need
"haulers and toters", we do have a wish list of tools if you'd like to
bring them.
Feel free to bring a small hand pruning saw if you like. Loppers are
always needed as well. Also, a wheelbarrow is always handy if you can
haul it to the site.
We will be doing some chainsaw work that day. For the safety of all, we
separate the chainsawyers and their small assistance crews from everyone
else. If you have a chainsaw, are trained or know how to use it, and
have full protective gear including helmet, eye protection, hearing
protection, chaps and appropriate boots, feel free to bring it.
Also, we really need one or more pole saws to reach overhanging limbs.
If you have one and care to bring and use it, please do so.
We'll probably work till about noon or so. If you can work later, that
would be great too!
If it is raining badly or all over the area, we'll cancel this workday.
However, I plan on working at least a little if it is anything short of
a widespread hard rain. Feel free to call Bill Bussey at 919 545-9104,
as late as 8 a.m., to verify a go or no go. However, if you aren't
comfortable with the forecast, use your best judgment and join us or not
as you prefer.
If you or your group would like to work days or early evenings other
than Saturdays, please let Bill Bussey <mailto:billbus at gte.net> know.
Please let Curt Devereux <mailto:devereux at gte.net> 919 919 544-3948
