UPDATE: American Tobacco Trail Workday for Saturday is now ON

Hi Volunteers for the American Tobacco Trail,

This is an *update* to our message yesterday. 

The regularly scheduled American Tobacco Trail workday on,*Saturday, May 
20*, on the American Tobacco Trail at the White Oak Church Road 
Trailhead <http://www.triangletrails.org/DIRECTIONS.HTM> is now *ON.*

Frank Bennett has graciously agreed to meet and lead folks at about 9 am 
at the White Oak Church Road Trailhead 
<http://www.triangletrails.org/DIRECTIONS.HTM>  tomorrow, Saturday May 
20.  Please read the message below as to what the team will be doing.

If you were planning on joining us, come on out!

If you arrive late, or if Frank is not at the White Oak Church Road 
Trailhead <http://www.triangletrails.org/DIRECTIONS.HTM> at or by 9:15 
or so, walk north on the currently unopened portion of the ATT, about 
1/3 mile north to the pile of cut brush and small trees. If you'd like, 
you can remove them from the trail surface. 
 
We are clearing and cleaning the adjoining drainage ditches and trail 
itself on this section of the trail that is planned to be under 
construction this summer.

If you like, you can go out there and drag/carry it off the trail into 
the adjoining woods. Right now, it is blocking the trail so the few 
walkers, bicyclists and equestrians have to step over it. They would 
undoubtedly appreciate any clearing that you could do!

Just be sure to drag and carry it *beyond* the drainage ditch and *over 
the top of the hill *on the other side of the ditch into the woods 
beyond. Also spread it out, so it isn't too much piled on top of other 
brush/trees. The key is to get it out of sight of the trail users and in 
direct contact with the ground. Most of this brush/limbs/trees are gum 
and pine, so they will decompose fairly quickly in the next year or so.

Another thing folks can do is to carry any trash/junk found on the trail 
north of the White Oak Parking area, north up to a pile that we are 
building next to Green Level Church Road. You'll see a pile on the left 
side of the trail just before the road crossing. Even carrying a few 
things from the several piles, plus occasional can or bottle left on the 
trail will help. Bring some trash bags to be most effective. We'll put 
the collected pile out closer to the road and call DOT for pickup when 
we get most everything picked up there.

If you are unsure of anything, please don't do it. We'll get it another 
day. Trash pickup and moving is easy. Anything you can do to remove 
trash from this section of the trail is appreciated.
 
Last week, Steve Holbrooks, Frank Bennett, John and Noah Steege helped 
clear and clean this section. We made a lot of progress. This section is 
arguably among the prettiest section's of the entire trail, but is also 
about the toughest to clean and clear.   

Bring work gloves, full shoes or boots, clothing appropriate for the 
weather, water and a snack if you like.* *Be prepared for ticks and 
poison ivy. However, the current work is beyond the poison ivy. We 
suggest long pants and even light long sleeves. You will need to sign a 
waiver and participation list at some point as well.

Feel free to bring a small hand pruning saw if you like. Loppers are 
always needed as well. Also, a wheelbarrow is always handy if you can 
haul it to the site.
