HI Volunteers for the American Tobacco Trail,
This message is to remind you of our American Tobacco Trail workday,
this* **Saturday, National Trails Day, June 3*, on the American Tobacco
Trail at the White Oak Church Road Trailhead
<http://www.triangletrails.org/DIRECTIONS.HTM> at 9 a.m.
Please join us,* Saturday, June 3* at 9 a.m. at the White Oak Church
Road Trailhead <http://www.triangletrails.org/DIRECTIONS.HTM> in Wake
County. Scroll down the web page to find the directions. Note, there may
be a shorter way to get to this trailhead from Cary, but the roads are
under construction in this area so our directions read from NC 751.
We'll also be working on *Sunday, June 4, same place, at 1 p.m.*
Also note, that if you arrive after 9:10 or so, the work group may have
driven over to the Green Level Church Road trail intersection in order
to save about a thirty minute walk down the trail with gear.
To get to Green Level Church Road from the parking area, drive out of
the parking area, turn right, go to the T intersection of Green Level
Church Road, turn right, go about 1/4 mile, to Ferrell Road on your
left. Turn left and and drive up Ferrell Road about a quarter mile or so
until you see vehicles parked along the right shoulder. Park on the
shoulder of Ferrell Road with the other vehicles. If you are parking on
the right side of the road, the trail is to your right. Go across the
shoulder and onto the trail. Walk north on the trail until you see the
group working.
Our main focus will be to clean out a junk and trash pile alongside the
future ATT in Chatham County. There will be some large pieces of junk
and trash in this pile. It is covered with a bit of brush, which we will
cut back as needed to clean out the junk.
Last week, T.J. Elkanick, Tom Mould, Frank Bennett and me finished the
major clearing, tree and brush removal of the next phase of the ATT in
Wake County. Cudos to them for a great job!
Bring work gloves, full shoes or boots, clothing appropriate for the
weather, water and a snack if you like.* *Be prepared for ticks and
poison ivy. Ticks are especially bad this year. We've had success using
Permethrin (available at most drugstores and outdoor retailers) sprayed
on cuffs and waistbands on clothing. We suggest long pants and even
light long sleeves. You will need to sign a waiver and participation list.
Because it is National Trails Day, we hope to have T-shirts for those
who participate in this workday.
While you don't have to bring any tools because we'll mainly need
"haulers and toters", we do have a wish list of tools if you'd like to
bring them.
Feel free to bring a small hand pruning saw if you like. Loppers are
always needed as well. Also, a wheelbarrow is always handy if you can
haul it to the site.
We can also use a pickup truck that you don't mind hauling junk, trash
and brush in. The bed will get dirty with junk and perhaps trash. We'll
clean it out at the end of the day, but experience shows brushing alone
won't get it all. Only a washing or vacuuming will get the bed
completely clean. Again, this is your call. If you have any concerns
about using your truck, then don't offer it.
We'll work till about noon or so.
At this writing, the weather on Saturday is calling for showers. If it
is rainy or worse on Saturday, we will have a limited workday that would
end before noon. Or we may have none at all. Please use your best
judgment to determine if you want to be working outside in rainy
conditions. However, I plan on working at least a little if it is
anything short of a widespread hard rain. Feel free to call Bill Bussey
at 919 545-9104, as late as 8 a.m., to verify a go or no go. However, if
you aren't comfortable with the forecast, use your best judgment and
join us or not as you prefer.
Because of the marginal weather on Saturday, we'll also hold a workday
on this same section on Sunday afternoon starting at 1 p.m. If you can,
please join us then as well or instead. You can come out anytime on
Sunday afternoon before 5 or so, if you'd like. We can use the help!
If you or your group would like to work days or early evenings other
than Saturdays, please let Bill Bussey <mailto:billbus at gte.net> know.
Please let Curt Devereux <mailto:devereux at gte.net> 919 919 544-3948
Frank Bennett <mailto:FJB675 at hotmail.com> 919-851-3992 or Bill Bussey
<mailto:billbus at gte.net> 919 545-9104 know if you have any questions.
