HI Volunteers for the American Tobacco Trail,
This message is to remind you of our American Tobacco Trail workday,
tomorrow, *Saturday, July 22*, on the American Tobacco Trail at the
O'Kelly Chapel Road Trailhead
<http://www.triangletrails.org/DIRECTIONS.HTM> at 9 a.m.
Please join us,* Saturday, July 22* at 9 a.m. at the O'Kelly Chapel Road
Trailhead <http://www.triangletrails.org/DIRECTIONS.HTM>in Chatham
County. Scroll down the web page to find the directions.
We'll be doing some general maintenance and upkeep on this section of
trail. WE'll walk up the trail to see what needs to be done. We'll be
cutting some overgrown grass, thorn bushes, removing downed limbs and
trees, cleaning drainage ditches and any thing else that we see.
We'll start with the section north of O'Kelly Chapel Road. If you are
driving from NC 751, which is about 2.5 miles west of the trail, this
will be on your left side when you park along the road. This is on the
same side of O'Kelly Chapel Road as the Rosemont development, which is
on either side of the trail here. It is across the road from the golf
course. Thus, if you arrive late, come join us *north *up the trail.
Thanks to all who made it out last weekend to work at the Fayetteville
Road Parking Area. We accomplished a lot and the *parking facility looks
great!* Could the three men who came late to the workday please contact
me via email or phone (919) 545-9104. I didn't get your names and
contact info. I'd like to make sure that we have you on our
participation list because you all really helped us by trimming the
trees and branches.
Bring work gloves, full shoes or boots, clothing appropriate for the
weather, water and a snack if you like.* *Be prepared for ticks and
poison ivy. Ticks are especially bad this year. We've had success using
Permethrin (available at most drugstores and outdoor retailers) sprayed
on cuffs and waistbands on clothing. We suggest long pants and even
light long sleeves. You will need to sign a waiver and participation list..
While you don't have to bring any tools because we'll mainly need
"haulers and toters", we do have a wish list of tools if you'd like to
bring them.
If you have a small push mower, we could use it at this workday. A
string trimmer could be used instead as well.
Feel free to bring a small hand pruning saw if you like. Loppers are
always needed as well. Also, a wheelbarrow is always handy if you can
haul it to the site.
We'll work till about noon or so.
If it is rainy or worse on Saturday, we will have a limited workday that
would end before noon. Or we may have none at all. Please use your best
judgment to determine if you want to be working outside in rainy
conditions. However, I plan on working at least a little if it is
anything short of a widespread hard rain. Feel free to call Bill Bussey
at 919 545-9104 as late as 8 a.m., to verify a go or no go. However, if
you aren't comfortable with the forecast, use your best judgment and
join us or not as you prefer.
If you or your group would like to work days or early evenings other
than Saturdays, please let Bill Bussey <mailto:billbus at gte.net> know.
Please let Curt Devereux <mailto:devereux at gte.net> 919 919 544-3948
Frank Bennett <mailto:FJB675 at hotmail.com> 919-851-3992 or Bill Bussey
