HI Volunteers for the American Tobacco Trail,

This message is to remind you of our American Tobacco Trail workday,
tomorrow, *Saturday, August 19*, on the American Tobacco Trail at the
Scott King Road Trailhead <http://www.triangletrails.org/DIRECTIONS.HTM>
at 9 a.m.

Please join us,* Saturday, August 19* at 9 a.m. at the Scott King Road
Trailhead <http://www.triangletrails.org/DIRECTIONS.HTM> in southern
Durham. Scott King Road turns left off Fayetteville Road about two miles
south of Southpoint Mall. It is the last left before you get to the NC
751 intersection traffic light. Scroll down the web page to find the
directions.

Our plan is to do some general maintenance and upkeep on this section of
trail around Scott King Road. We'll be emptying the trash cans at this
intersection as well. (Somebody's GOTTA do it! ;-) ) We'll go down
(south) (if you are coming from Fayetteville Road, this will be to the
right of where you park) the trail to see what needs to be done. We'll
be cutting some overgrown grass, thorn bushes, removing downed limbs and
trees, cleaning drainage ditches and any thing else that we see.

Thanks to all who made it out last weekend to the Carolina Tarwheels
BikeFest. We had a great time as we served Gatorade, fruit, peanut
butter and jelly sandwiches (the most popular by far!) and cookies to
over 850 bicyclists enjoying the cooler than normal day. All BikeFest
participants appreciated the great rest stop and our TRTC team working
on it.

Bring work gloves, full shoes or boots, clothing appropriate for the
weather, water and a snack if you like.* *Be prepared for ticks and
poison ivy. Ticks are especially bad this year. We've had success using
Permethrin (available at most drugstores and outdoor retailers) sprayed
on cuffs and waistbands on clothing. We suggest long pants and even
light long sleeves. You will need to sign a waiver and participation list..

While you don't have to bring any tools because we'll mainly need
"haulers and toters", we do have a wish list of tools if you'd like to
bring them.

We really need loppers at this workday. If you have a small hand pruning
saw please bring it.

If you have a small push mower, we could use it at this workday. A
string trimmer could be used instead as well.

Also, a wheelbarrow is always handy if you can haul it to the site.

We'll work till about noon or so.

If it is rainy or worse on Saturday, we will have a limited workday that
would end before noon. Or we may have none at all. Please use your best
judgment to determine if you want to be working outside in rainy
conditions. However, I plan on working at least a little if it is
anything short of a widespread hard rain. Feel free to call Bill Bussey
at 919 545-9104 or Frank Bennett 919 851-3992 as late as 8 a.m., to
verify a go or no go. However, if you aren't comfortable with the
forecast, use your best judgment and join us or not as you prefer.
If you or your group would like to work days or early evenings other
than Saturdays, please let Bill Bussey <mailto:billbus at gte.net> know.

Please let Frank Bennett <mailto:FJB675 at hotmail.com> 919-851-3992 or
Bill Bussey <mailto:billbus at gte.net> 919 545-9104 know if you have any
questions.

stalling on designing and building the American Tobacco Trail.

One more bit of news. The final phase of the ATT in Wake County, from
the White Oak Church Road Parking area north to the Chatham County line,
is *NOW UNDER CONSTRUCTION.* This is really* great news!* Many of you on
this list have helped clear and clean this section. *Thank YOU! *

Heavy grading equipment is now being used on the entire mile plus length
of this section of trail. For your safety, Wake Parks Staff, as do we,
ask that you do not access this section of trail while construction is
in progress. The contractor, Carolina Asphalt Paving Inc., an
experienced greenway and trail builder, says they should be complete in
90 days, weather permitting.

Thanks for your help and support in building the American Tobacco Trail.

Happy Trails,
