HI Volunteers for the American Tobacco Trail,
This message is to remind you of our American Tobacco Trail workday,
*Saturday, September 2*, on the American Tobacco Trail at
the Fayetteville Road Trailhead
<http://www.triangletrails.org/DIRECTIONS.HTM> at 9 a.m.
Please join us,* Saturday, September 2* at 9 a.m. at the Fayetteville
Road Trailhead <http://www.triangletrails.org/DIRECTIONS.HTM> in
southern Durham about 3/4 mile south of Southpoint Mall. Scroll down the
web page to find the directions .
From Exit 276 on I-40, go south toward Southpoint Mall, pass Southpoint
Mall on your right, go about 3/4 mile (1 mile from I-40) The parking
area is on the driveway on the right IMMEDIATELY before the cement
bridge. If you cross the cement bridge and the entrance of Chancellor's
Ridge, you've gone too far.
Our plan is to do some general maintenance and upkeep on this section of
the parking area and the trail around it. Depending on the number of
folks who join us, we may start work on a patio area in the parking
area. Also, we may be cutting some overgrown grass, thorn bushes,
removing downed limbs and trees, cleaning drainage ditches and any thing
else that we see on the trail north or south of the parking area.
Thanks to all who made it out last weekend to the O'Kelly Chapel Road
workday. We made major headway in filling a former tank trap with fill
dirt and gravel we have collected at this intersection. It was very hard
work, but the pile is almost gone and the "trap" is almost filled. A
great job was had and done by all who participated. Thank you!
As always, bring work gloves, full shoes or boots, clothing appropriate
for the weather, water and a snack if you like.* *Be prepared for ticks
and poison ivy. Ticks, and now chiggers are especially bad this year.
We've had success using Permethrin (available at most drugstores and
outdoor retailers) sprayed on cuffs and waistbands on clothing. We
suggest long pants and even light long sleeves. You will need to sign a
waiver and participation list..
While you don't have to bring any tools because we'll mainly need
"haulers and toters", we do have a wish list of tools if you'd like to
bring them.
If you have a pointed shovel, or a blade style mattock, please bring
it/them.
We always can use loppers at this workday and all workdays. If you have
a small hand pruning saw please bring it.
If you have a small push mower, we could use it at this workday. A
string trimmer could be used instead as well.
Also, a wheelbarrow is always handy if you can haul it to the site.
We'll work till about noon or so.
If it is rainy or worse on Saturday, we will have a limited workday that
would end before noon. Or we may have none at all. Please use your best
judgment to determine if you want to be working outside in rainy
conditions.
However, I plan on working at least a little if it is anything short of
a widespread hard rain. Feel free to call Bill Bussey at 919 545-9104 or
Frank Bennett 919 851-3992 as late as 8 a.m., to verify a go or no go.
However, if you aren't comfortable with the forecast, use your best
judgment and join us or not as you prefer.
This is a holiday weekend, so we understand if you have other plans. We
look forward to seeing you at future workdays.
If you or your group would like to work days or early evenings other
than Saturdays, please let Bill Bussey <mailto:billbus at gte.net> know.
Please let Curt Devereux <mailto:devereux at gte.net> 919 919 544-3948

In ATT News, Wake County American Tobacco Trail Manager, Tony D'Amico
asked us to pass along that the ATT* New Hill-Olive Chapel Road Parking
Access will be closed starting at 8 am Monday, August 28 through
Thursday, August 31.* The parking area will reopen, Friday, September 1st.
Note: Due to the bad weather, this closing may be extended. Check with
Wake County Parks at 919 387-4328 before you use this trailhead on
Friday, September 1 or use one of the other trailheads.
Contractors will be making improvements to the New Hill park entrance
and need this amount of
time to complete the work.
Sorry for any inconvenience that this may cause.
The Wimberly and White Oak entrances and all trail sections will still
be open.
Please contact Tony D'Amico at Tony.D'Amico at co.wake.nc.us (work)
387-4328 if you have any questions.
One more bit of news. The final phase of the ATT in Wake County, from
the White Oak Church Road Parking area north to the Chatham County line,
is *NOW UNDER CONSTRUCTION.* This is really* great news!* Many of you on
this list have helped clear and clean this section. *Thank YOU! *
Heavy grading equipment is now being used on the entire mile plus length
of this section of trail. For your safety, Wake Parks Staff, as do we,
ask that you do not access this section of trail while construction is
in progress. The contractor, Carolina Asphalt Paving Inc., an
experienced greenway and trail builder, says they should be complete in
90 days, weather permitting.
Thanks for your help and support in building the American Tobacco Trail.
Happy Trails,
