HI Volunteers for the American Tobacco Trail,

This message is to remind you of our American Tobacco Trail workday,
*Saturday, September 16*, on the American Tobacco Trail at the
Wake/Chatham border at 9 a.m. This is a change from our earlier schedule.

Directions are below. However, you can follow directions to the White
Oak Church Road Acess <http://www.triangletrails.org/DIRECTIONS.HTM> and
be pretty close!

Please join us,* Saturday, September 16* at 9 a.m. on the ATT near
Wake/Chatham border.

Directions:

From I-40 Exit 276, Southpoint Mall-Fayetteville Road, go south - away
from Durham - toward Jordan Lake.

Go past the mall on your right and 2.4 miles all the way to the end of
Fayetteville Road. Here, Fayetteville Road intersects NC 751 at a light.

Turn right at the light. Go 6.6 miles, passing O'Kelly Chapel Road at
.75 miles and New Hope Church Road (see Exxon convenience store on left)
at 4.2 miles. At or near 6.6 miles is Lewter Shop Road on the left. See
Jeans Berry Patch off to the left. Turn left on Lewter Shop Road.

Go approximately 2.5 miles or so. See a place with small auto/truck size
trailers on the right. Immediately beyond his place is the Chatham/Wake
County line. About a 1/4 mile beyond the county line, you'll see White
Oak Church Road on your right. Continue beyond to the first left past
White Oak Church Road. This is Farrell Road. If you cross the new
construction of the trail crossing, you've gone too far.

Turn left onto Farrell Road. Go about 1/3 to 1/2 mile. The trail will be
on your right. Park on the side of the road. I'm sure our cars will be
parked there so you'll see them. We'll be working on the trail just
north of there. We don't want to park in or near the driveway where
we'll be working, so we'll walk a few hundred feet in.

We'll have a fairly large (between 30-50) group of Duke students helping
us that day. Our plan is to remove some brush and logs which we cut and
piled on the trail a little over a year ago. With this group, we'll do a
"bucket brigade" line down the trail a few hundred feet or so in order
to spread it out into the woods. We'll do some other general clearing
work in this area as time and person power permits.

Thanks to all who made it out last weekend. We did some cleanup of the
trail crossing, as well as broke down a large pile of dirt obstructing
part of the trail. Tom Mould did some pole sawing on some overhead limbs
which really made this area look good. Thanks and Cudos to all who helped!

As always, bring work gloves, full shoes or boots, clothing appropriate
for the weather, water and a snack if you like.* *Be prepared for ticks
and poison ivy. Ticks, and now chiggers are especially bad this year.
We've had success using Permethrin (available at most drugstores and
outdoor retailers) sprayed on cuffs and waistbands on clothing. We
suggest long pants and even light long sleeves. You will need to sign a
waiver and participation list..

While you don't have to bring any tools because this will mainly be a
"hauling and toting" day, we do have a wish list of tools if you'd like
to bring them.

Feel free to bring a small hand pruning saw if you like. Loppers are
always needed as well. A string trimmer would be helpful as the trail is
overgrown in this area. Also, a wheelbarrow is always handy if you can
haul it to the site.

We could use a post hole digger if you can bring it. We will have some
eager diggers to share in the work!

We have a need to do some chainsaw work in this area. For the safety of
all, we separate the chainsawyers and their small assistance crews from
everyone else. If you have a chainsaw, are trained or know how to use
it, and have full protective gear including helmet, eye protection,
hearing protection, chaps and appropriate boots, feel free to bring it.

We'll work till about noon or so.

If it is rainy or worse on Saturday, we will have a limited workday that
would end before noon. Or we may have none at all. Please use your best
judgment to determine if you want to be working outside in rainy
conditions.

However, I plan on working at least a little if it is anything short of
a widespread hard rain. Feel free to call Bill Bussey at 919 545-9104 or
Frank Bennett 919 851-3992 as late as 8 a.m., to verify a go or no go.
However, if you aren't comfortable with the forecast, use your best
judgment and join us or not as you prefer.
If you or your group would like to work days or early evenings other
than Saturdays, please let Bill Bussey <mailto:billbus at gte.net> know.

Please let Curt Devereux <mailto:devereux at gte.net> 919 919 544-3948
Frank Bennett <mailto:FJB675 at hotmail.com> 919-851-3992 or Bill Bussey
<mailto:billbus at gte.net> 919 545-9104 know if you have any questions.

One more bit of news. The final phase of the ATT in Wake County, from
the White Oak Church Road Parking area north to the Chatham County line,
is *NOW UNDER CONSTRUCTION.* This is really* great news!* Many of you on
this list have helped clear and clean this section. *Thank YOU! *

Heavy grading equipment is now being used on the entire mile plus length
of this section of trail. For your safety, Wake Parks Staff, as do we,
ask that you do not access this section of trail while construction is
in progress. The contractor, Carolina Asphalt Paving Inc., an
experienced greenway and trail builder, says they should be open towards
the middle of October, weather permitting.

Thanks for your help and support in building the American Tobacco Trail.

Happy Trails,
