HI Volunteers for the American Tobacco Trail,
This message is to remind you of our American Tobacco Trail workday,
*Saturday, October 14*, on the American Tobacco Trail at the New Hope
Church Road Trailhead <http://www.triangletrails.org/DIRECTIONS.HTM> at
9 a.m.
Please join us,* Saturday, October 14* at 9 a.m. at the New Hope Church
Road Trailhead <http://www.triangletrails.org/DIRECTIONS.HTM> in Chatham
County. Scroll down the web page to find the directions .
>From Exit 274 on I-40, go south on NC 751 toward Jordan Lake, pass the
Southpoint Mall/Renaissance Parkway area on your left, pass the
Fayetteville Road intersection light about 2 miles south, and continue
about 6 miles to New Hope Church Road. See the Exxon Convenience store
on your left at the intersection, just after the Wildlife viewing area.
Turn left onto New Hope Church Road and go approximately 2.5 miles to
the trailhead crossing. If you intersect Yates Store Road you've gone
too far.
Our plan is finish tear down of a dirt pile at the intersection. We'll
also do some general maintenance and upkeep on this section the trail in
this area including removing downed limbs and trees, cleaning drainage
ditches and any thing else that we see on the trail north or south of
New Hope Church Road.
Thanks to Jerry Bressler who made it out with Frank last weekend. They
installed a water bar erosion control device at the Fayetteville Road
Parking Area during this very dreary day. We'll be working more at this
parking area in the coming weeks.
As always, bring work gloves, full shoes or boots, clothing appropriate
for the weather, water and a snack if you like.* *We suggest long pants
and even light long sleeves. You will need to sign a waiver and
participation list..
While you don't have to bring any tools because we'll mainly need
"haulers and toters", we do have a wish list of tools if you'd like to
bring them.
If you have a shovel or mattock, please bring it Saturday. Feel free to
bring a small hand pruning saw if you like. Loppers are always needed as
well.
Bring a pole saw for cutting overhead limbs if you have one. Several
folks have brought pole saws to workdays in the last few months, and we
ALWAYS put them to work!
Also, a wheelbarrow is always handy if you can haul it to the site.
We have a need to do some chainsaw work in this area. For the safety of
all, we separate the chainsawyers and their small assistance crews from
everyone else. If you have a chainsaw, are trained or know how to use
it, and have full protective gear including helmet, eye protection,
hearing protection, chaps and appropriate boots, feel free to bring it.
We can use a small push mower or string trimmer if you have one as well.
We'll work till about noon or so.
If it is rainy or worse on Saturday, we will have a limited workday that
would end before noon. Or we may have none at all. Please use your best
judgment to determine if you want to be working outside in rainy
conditions.
However, I plan on working at least a little if it is anything short of
a widespread hard rain. Feel free to call Bill Bussey
<mailto:billbus at gte.net> 919 545-9104 or Frank Bennett
<mailto:FJB675 at hotmail.com> 919-851-3992 as late as 8 a.m., to verify a
go or no go. However, if you aren't comfortable with the forecast, use
your best judgment and join us or not as you prefer.
If you or your group would like to work days or early evenings other
than Saturdays, please let Bill Bussey <mailto:billbus at gte.net> know.
Please let Curt Devereux <mailto:devereux at gte.net> 919 919 544-3948
Frank Bennett <mailto:FJB675 at hotmail.com> 919-851-3992 or Bill Bussey
<mailto:billbus at gte.net> 919 545-9104 know if you have any questions.

Also if you haven't already, please go sign our petition
<http://www.petitiononline.com/att2/petition.html>asking Durham to stop
stalling on designing and building the American Tobacco Trail.
*UPDATE:* Dan Clever and I presented this petition to the Durham City
Council at their workday on October 5. Thanks to you there were over
*2700 names and comments* on the petition. And Council members have them
all! Councilman Eugene Brown said "It is time to move beyond rhetoric
and get to work!" Immediately after the presentation, Durham City
Manager Patrick Baker offered to meet with us on October 14.
*Yesterday,* Dan and I met with Durham Assistant City Manager Theodore
Voorhees and Public Works Director Kathryn Kalb at the City Manager's
office. In the update, they said that Durham was awaiting funding amount
approval from the North Carolina Board of Transportation. Once that
amount is finalized and formalized, Durham will submit a revised
Municipal Agreement and a professional design services contract to NCDOT
for their approval. Durham anticipates that these two items may be in
place before the end of the calendar year.
For more info on this, check out www.triangletrails.org in a few days.
This is progress that /*would not have been possible without all of your
support*./ According to the memo from Engineering Manager Lee Murphy,
the ATT project was transferred from General Services and Parks and
Recreation to the Public Works Dept. in July 2006 AFTER the June 9, 2006
letter to the City Manager was mailed and after the petition was
started. Our meeting yesterday with Mr. Voorhees and Ms. Kalb and
arranged by Mr. Baker, was not set up until AFTER the petition with over
2700 names was delivered last week.
*
Again, THANK YOU for all of your support for this petition and the ATT.*
One more bit of news. The final phase of the ATT in Wake County, from
the White Oak Church Road Parking area north to the Chatham County line,
is *NOW UNDER CONSTRUCTION.* It is almost complete, with the traffic
control gates now being installed. Many of you on this list have helped
clear and clean this section. *Thank YOU! *
Wake is still anticipating an opening by the end of this month. However
as always be careful around the construction and continuing maintenance
which is still happening in Wake and other places on the ATT.
Thanks for your help and support in building the American Tobacco Trail.
Happy Trails,
