HI Volunteers for the American Tobacco Trail,
This message is to remind you of our American Tobacco Trail workday,
*Saturday, October 21*, on the American Tobacco Trail at the
Chatham/Wake County line at 9 a.m.
Please join us,* Saturday, October 21* at 9 a.m. at the Chatham/Wake
County line in Chatham County.
*Directions: *
From I-40 Exit 276, Southpoint Mall-Fayetteville Road, go south - away
from Durham - toward Jordan Lake.
Go past the mall on your right and 2.4 miles all the way to the end of
Fayetteville Road. Here, Fayetteville Road intersects NC 751 at a light.
Turn left at the light. Go 6.6 miles, passing O'Kelly Chapel Road at .75
miles and New Hope Church Road (see Exxon convenience store on left) at
4.2 miles. At or near 6.6 miles is Lewter Shop Road on the left. See the
sign for the *Pumpkin Patch* on the left. This used to be Jean's Berry
Patch. Turn left onto Lewter Shop Road.
Go approximately 2.5 miles or so. See a place with small auto/truck size
trailers on the right. Immediately beyond his place is the Chatham/Wake
County line. The road changes texture at the county line. About a 1/4
mile beyond the county line, you'll see White Oak Church Road on your
right. Continue beyond to the first left past White Oak Church Road. This
is Farrell Road. If you cross the new construction of the trail
crossing, you've gone too far.
Turn left onto Farrell Road. Go about 1/3 to 1/2 mile. The trail will be
on your right. Park on the side of the road. I'm sure our cars will be
parked there so you'll see them. We'll be working on the trail just
north of there. We don't want to park in or near the driveway where
we'll be working, so we'll walk a few hundred feet in.
We plan to have a large group of Daughters and their Fathers from the
National Charity League in their annual Daughter/Father outing. Our
similar event last year was a tremendous success and we accomplished a lot.
Our plan is to remove some brush and logs which we cut and piled on the
trail a little over a year ago. Some will be in piles, others will be
scattered about. We'll do a "bucket brigade" line up the side slopes of
the trail in order to spread it out into the woods. We'll do some other
general clearing work in this area as time and person power permits.
Bring *work gloves*, *full shoes or boots*, *long pants*, and other
clothing appropriate for the weather, *water and a snack* if you like.*
*Though ticks are down at this time, be prepared for mosquitoes and
poison ivy. Ticks, and now chiggers are especially bad this year. We've
had success using Permethrin (available at most drugstores and outdoor
retailers) sprayed on cuffs and waistbands on clothing.
We suggest long pants and even light long sleeves. You will need to sign
a waiver and participation list.
We'll be picking up and hauling decomposing wood, be pulling vines and
briars. We'll probably be doing some limited shoveling and mattock work
to clean out some drainage ditches. You WILL get messy!
While you don't have to bring any tools because we'll mainly need
"haulers and toters", we do have a *wish list *of tools if you'd like to
bring them.
Feel free to bring a small hand pruning saw if you like. Loppers are
always needed as well. Also, a wheelbarrow is always handy if you can
haul it to the site.
We have a need to do some chainsaw work in this area. For the safety of
all, we separate the chainsawyers and their small assistance crews from
everyone else. If you have a chainsaw, are trained or know how to use
it, and have full protective gear including helmet, eye protection,
hearing protection, chaps and appropriate boots, feel free to bring it.
We can use a string trimmer and/or a small push mower if you have one as
well.
We'll work till about noon or so.
Thanks to the folks who made it out to New Hope Church Road last
weekend. We finished knocking down a former "tank trap" which will allow
good trail access, as well as cleared and cleaned the trail in this
area. On Sunday, around 60 folks from the confirmation class from
Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Durham joined us as we worked
near the Chatham/Wake line. Thanks to their efforts the trail is looking
great at the county line.
As always, bring work gloves, full shoes or boots, clothing appropriate
for the weather, water and a snack if you like.* *We suggest long pants
and even light long sleeves. You will need to sign a waiver and
participation list..
While you don't have to bring any tools because we'll mainly need
"haulers and toters", we do have a wish list of tools if you'd like to
bring them.
If you have a shovel or mattock, please bring it Saturday. Feel free to
bring a small hand pruning saw if you like. Loppers are always needed as
well.
Bring a pole saw for cutting overhead limbs if you have one. Several
folks have brought pole saws to workdays in the last few months, and we
ALWAYS put them to work!
Also, a wheelbarrow is always handy if you can haul it to the site.

We'll work till about noon or so.
If it is rainy or worse on Saturday, we will have a limited workday that
would end before noon. Or we may have none at all. Please use your best
judgment to determine if you want to be working outside in rainy
conditions.
However, I plan on working at least a little if it is anything short of
a widespread hard rain. Feel free to call Bill Bussey

a go or no go. However, if you aren't comfortable with the forecast, use
your best judgment and join us or not as you prefer.
If you or your group would like to work days or early evenings other
than Saturdays, please let Bill Bussey <mailto:billbus at gte.net> know.

***Again, THANK YOU for all of your support for this petition and the ATT.*
One more bit of news. The final phase of the ATT in Wake County, from
the White Oak Church Road Parking area north to the Chatham County line,
is *NOW UNDER CONSTRUCTION.* It is almost complete, with the traffic
control gates now being installed. Many of you on this list have helped
clear and clean this section. *Thank YOU! *
Wake is still anticipating an opening by the end of this month. However
as always be careful around the construction and continuing maintenance
which is still happening in Wake and other places on the ATT.
Thanks for your help and support in building the American Tobacco Trail.
Happy Trails,
