Hi Volunteers for the American Tobacco Trail,

This message is to remind you of our American Tobacco Trail workday, 
*Saturday, April 28*, on the American Tobacco Trail at the Chatham/Wake 
County line in Chatham County

Please join us, tomorrow,* Saturday, April 28* at 9 a.m. at the 
Chatham/Wake County line in Chatham County.  

*Directions:*

 From I-40 Exit 276, Southpoint Mall-Fayetteville Road, go south - away 
from Durham - toward Jordan Lake.

Go past the mall on your right and 2.4 miles all the way to the end of 
Fayetteville Road. Here, Fayetteville Road intersects NC 751 at a light.

Turn left at the light. Go 6.6 miles, passing O'Kelly Chapel Road at .75 
miles and New Hope Church Road (see Exxon convenience store on left) at 
4.2 miles. At or near 6.6 miles is Lewter Shop Road on the left. See the 
sign for Jean's Berry Patch. Turn left onto Lewter Shop Road.

Go approximately 2.5 miles or so. See a place with small auto/truck size 
trailers on the right. Immediately beyond his place is the Chatham/Wake 
County line. The road changes texture at the county line. About a 1/4 
mile beyond the county line, you'll see White Oak Church Road on your 
right. Continue beyond to the first left past White Oak Church Road.This 
is Farrell Road. If you cross the American Tobacco Trail bicycle 
crossing (see signs), you've gone too far.

Turn left onto Farrell Road. Go about 1/2 mile. Pass the Turtle Farm 
subdivision entrance on your left. The ATT will be on your right. 
Continue till you see the first brick house on the right ahead. Turn 
around and park on the side of the road across from the house, (opposite 
or west) side of the road before you get to the house. I'm sure our cars 
will be parked there so you'll see them. We'll be working on the trail 
just north of there.

Our goal is to clean and dig open one of the drainage ditches 
immediately adjacent to the trail surface in this area. This will soon 
allow opening of the entire 10 foot width of the trail through this long 
neglected area instead of the narrow 2-4 foot-width path that is being 
regularly used now. We'll also be spreading and compacting (by stomping 
on it with feet and anything with wheels!) dirt and stone dug from the 
ditches.

We'll also be picking up and hauling away cut brush, sticks, brush and 
limbs that the volunteers from Cheer Carolina 
<http://www.cheercarolina.com/> and the Triangle Presbyterian Church 
<http://www.trianglepc.org/> gathered and raked several weeks back. We 
thank them for their great work!

Those who work on the ditches may may get their feet and cloths damp and 
muddy. *You probably WILL get messy!  *But you'll get a good workout and 
have a good time too. The weather is supposed to be nice that day.

As always,bring *work gloves*, *full shoes or boots*, *long pants*, and 
other clothing appropriate for the weather. Bring *water and a snack* if 
you like. With Spring here, be prepared for briars because you will be 
in the woods. Also be prepared for ticks and poison ivy.  For ticks, 
we've had success using Permethrin (available at most drugstores and 
outdoor retailers) sprayed on cuffs and waistbands on clothing. 

You will need to sign a waiver and participation list.

While you don't have to bring any tools because we do have some tools, 
we do have a wish list of tools if you'd like to bring them.

We can use several cutter mattocks, or a hoe or flat blade style mattock 
if you have one. Round or pointed end shovels are helpful in this area 
as well. We really need one or more wheelbarrows if you can bring them 
as well.

Feel free to bring a small hand pruning saw if you like. Loppers are 
always needed as well. 

We can REALLY use a pickup truck which you don't mind hauling brush, 
logs and trash on the trail, please contact Bill Bussey 
<mailto:billbus at gte.net> 919 545-9104 so we can make plans. We'll have a 
tarp for the bed of the truck.

We'll work till about noon or so. A group of us usually go out to lunch 
after we are finished. Frank and me welcome all to join us.

We normally plan on working at least a little if it is anything short of 
a widespread hard rain. Feel free to contact or call Bill Bussey

go or no go.  However, if you aren't comfortable with the forecast, use 
your best judgment and join us or not as you prefer.

Last week we canceled our workday to set up information tables at the 
Wake County Earth Day and Durham Earth Day celebrations. However, 
Cotten, Frank, Dave and Bill did clear some major downed trees which 
completely blocked the trail south of Scott King Road in southern 
Durham. Thanks guys for getting this off the trail so it is open again. 
Also, on Sunday, Bill did some more ditch digging work at this 
Saturday's work area.

Also, TRTC had an information table at the   Kids in Training Duathlon 
on the ATT <http://www.kidsintraining.com/kit_duathlon.htm> on Sunday. 
We met a lot of great kids, some doing their first bike or running race, 
at the event.

*Looking for Help to Open or Close Fayetteville Road Access Gate!*
We are looking for help in opening and closing the gate at our 
Fayetteville Road Parking Area 
<http://www.triangletrails.org/DIRECTIONS.HTM> in the morning and/or 
early evening. If you live near or pass by the Parking area in the 
mornings or evenings, or you regularly use the trail here, this might be 
a way you can help open this facility and earn some extra money as well. 
We are willing to pay a small stipend for this work. If you are 
interested in finding out more, or know someone who might be interested,

And let me take this opportunity to* Thank You* for all of your help and 
support in building, cleaning and clearing the American Tobacco Trail in 
2006 and into 2007. Thanks to your hard work, expertise and diligent 
efforts, we are making steady progress. Thousands of trail users are 
*now safely using* the sections of the trail and facilities you have 
helped clear, clean and build. We get so many wonderful comments and 
thanks on how well the trail looks when folks use these facilities. 
These trail users are often *amazed* to find out that these improvements 
were done *completely* by volunteers. Thank you for the great work and 
for volunteering your valuable time to help with this project. Know that 
it wouldn't be possible without the great work of each and every one of you.

Thanks for your help and support in building the American Tobacco Trail.
