Hi Volunteers for the American Tobacco Trail,

We'll be doing something a little different than our usual American
Tobacco Trail workday, *Saturday, June 2*, on the American Tobacco Trail
this weekend. In honor of National Trails Day, we'll be unveiling a new
"Welcome to Chatham County" sign at the Chatham-Wake County line.

We will NOT be doing any trail work this weekend. Workdays will resume
next weekend.

Please join us, * Saturday, June 2* at 10 a.m. at the Chatham/Wake
County line in Chatham County as we unveil our new "Welcome to Chatham
County" sign.

*Directions to Event:*

*From Chatham County or US 64/NC 751 intersection:* Turn North onto NC
751 toward Durham. Go north 3 miles. Turn right onto Lewter Shop Road.
See Jean's Berry Patch on the right.

Go approximately 2.5 miles or so. See a place with small auto/truck size
trailers on the right. Immediately beyond his place is the Chatham/Wake
County line. The road changes texture at the county line. About a 1/4
mile beyond the county line, you'll see White Oak Church Road on your
right. Turn right onto White Oak Church Road. Go approximately 1/2 mile.
See blue American Tobacco Trail sign on left. Pull into parking area and
park.

At trail entrance turn left or north onto ATT. Walk or ride your bike
approximately 1 1/4 miles to County line. You'll cross Green Level
Church Road on the way. Ceremony will be at Chatham-Wake County line.

If you prefer to park closer to the ceremony site in order to walk in,
follow above directions to White Oak Church Road. However, instead of
turning right on White Oak Church Road, continue beyond to the first
left past White Oak Church Road. This is Farrell Road. If you cross the
American Tobacco Trail bicycle crossing (see signs), you've gone too far.

Turn left onto Farrell Road. Go about 1/2 mile. See the Turtle Farm
subdivision entrance on your left. Private Drive will be on your right.
You may park along the shoulder of the road in this area being careful
not to block any driveways. The ATT will be on your right. Walk in on
right driveway to event location.

*From I-40 Exit 276, Southpoint Mall-Fayetteville Road: *On Fayetteville
Road, go south - away from Durham - toward Jordan Lake.

Go past the mall on your right and 2.4 miles all the way to the end of
Fayetteville Road. Here, Fayetteville Road intersects NC 751 at a light.

Turn left at the light. Go 6.6 miles, passing O'Kelly Chapel Road at .75
miles and New Hope Church Road (see Exxon convenience store on left) at
4.2 miles. At or near 6.6 miles is Lewter Shop Road on the left. See the
sign for Jean's Berry Patch. Turn left or east (right if coming from
south) onto Lewter Shop Road. Follow above directions from Lewter Shop
Road and Jean's Berry Patch.

*Event Details:* The purpose of this unveiling event is to formally
present and show for the first time a */Welcome to Chatham County/* sign
on the American Tobacco Trail at the Chatham and Wake County line. The
public is invited. This sign featuring the new Chatham County logo
graphic, (see below) was designed by Chatham County citizens and is now
being phased in for use on county letterheads and other official Chatham
County signage and uses. Similar /Welcome to Chatham County/ signs, but
of an older design, are now in use at major highway entrances to Chatham
County.

We want the many trail users already using this section of the trail to
know they are entering into Chatham County. While Chatham County has
been the last jurisdiction to formally start work on the American
Tobacco Trail, with TRTC's help, they have opened for safe use this
arguably most beautiful and scenic section for use now - several years
ahead of the formal opening."

We also want everyone to know that the American Tobacco Trail *IS* now
open for use for trail users." While this unveiling is not to formally
open or dedicate the trail in this area - that will come later when the
trail is formally constructed by the jurisdictions - we *do* want folks
to know that the trail does can and is safely used *now*.

More importantly, the American Tobacco Trail at both the Wake-Chatham
and Durham-Chatham county lines is *the first shared-use off-road trail
open for use in all of North Carolina to cross jurisdictional
boundaries*. This is the only multijurisdictional construction project
of *ANY* kind currently underway in the Triangle! It connects the
jurisdictions of the City of Durham, Durham County, Chatham County,
Cary, Apex and Wake County, and runs through lands owned and managed by
the NC Department of Transportation Rail Division, US Army Corps of
Engineers and the NC Wildlife Resources Commission. All of these
jurisdictions and agencies have extensively participated in the ATT's
planning and construction. The ATT has been largely paid for with funds
administered and provided by the NC Department of Transportation
Division of Bicycle and Pedestrian Transportation, which has also
provided design assistance; as well as with other funds and grants.

While the Wake County section of the ATT that was completed in late
2006, lets folks walk or ride the 6.3 miles in Wake - they can continue
further into Chatham an additional 2 miles for a 8.25 mile walk, run or
ride! Double that for a 16.5 mile walk or ride and you've got one of the
longest off-road greenway experiences anywhere in the state!

The event will last no more than 30 minutes. Starting at 10 a.m., we'll
go over some of the history that brought us to this point. We'll then
recognize and have some brief remarks from any officials and staff in
attendance. We'll unveil the sign, and be done.

We'll have a version of our new ATT User maps to give away to
participants as well. Also, several participants will receive National
Trails Day T-shirts on a first come, first serve basis.

No food will be provided, but we will have special souvenir Chatham
County Public Works Bottled water featuring the sign logo, available to
those who walk or ride in from the White Oak Creek Road Access.

Last weekend, Coleton Musciano, Chuck Musciano, Sharon Mitchell, Katelyn
Mitchell Jason Tan, Alyx Drebitko, Scott Drebitko, Frank Bennett and
Bill Bussey worked just north of the Chatham-Wake line to complete a
long in progress drainage ditch we have been working on. Thanks to their
efforts, this ditch was largely completed. We have a lot more work in
this area to do in the coming months. But because of their hard work,
this area should remain fairly dry whenever we next get some rain!
Thanks to everyone who came out and worked hard on this very nice day!

Please let Bill Bussey <mailto:billbus at gte.net> 919 545-9104 know
anytime if you have any questions.

And let me take this opportunity to* Thank You* for all of your help and
support in building, cleaning and clearing the American Tobacco Trail in
2006 and into 2007. Thanks to your hard work, expertise and diligent
efforts, we are making steady progress. Thousands of trail users are
*now safely using* the sections of the trail and facilities you have
helped clear, clean and build. We get so many wonderful comments and
thanks on how well the trail looks when folks use these facilities.
These trail users are often *amazed* to find out that these improvements
were done *completely* by volunteers. Thank you for the great work and
for volunteering your valuable time to help with this project. Know that
it wouldn't be possible without the great work of each and every one of you.

Thanks for your help and support in building the American Tobacco Trail.

Happy Trails,
