Hi Volunteers for the American Tobacco Trail,

This message is to remind you of our American Tobacco Trail workday,
*Saturday, June 30*, at the O'Kelly Chapel Road trailhead
<http://triangletrails.org/DIRECTIONS.HTM>at 9 a.m.

Please join us, *Saturday, June 30* at 9 a.m. at the O'Kelly Chapel Road
trailhead <http://triangletrails.org/DIRECTIONS.HTM> in Chatham County.

Our goal is to clear and clean the trail in this area. We haven't worked
this area between the trestles in awhile, so we need to mow and string
trim here too. We'll also have a drainage ditch we need to redig and
clean the drainage ditch at the Pittard-Sears Road crossing. We may
drive over there from the meeting place.

Thus, if you arrive late and find no vehicles parked at the meeting
place, either walk south down the trail .8 miles, or continue east on
O'Kelly Chapel Road to the 2nd gravel road on the right. This road is
under construction. Turn right onto Pittard-Sears Road and go
approximately 1.5 miles to where the trail crosses the road just beyond
the white house on the right. We'll be on the trail in this area.

The weather is supposed to be partly cloudy or perhaps even rainy on
Saturday.

Last week, seven of us worked to dig some drainage ditches and spread
dirt on the trail just north of the Chatham-Wake County line. Carey
Johnston and one other from Triangle Impact <http://triangleimpact.org/>
joined us for the first time this weekend. We hope to work a lot more
with Triangle Impact in the future.

Sorry, I currently can't find the sign-in list to list all the wonderful
volunteers who helped us. I sincerely apologize for this problem.
:-[ I'm having major computer problems this week as well. That
said, we had a very good workday which accomplished a lot. Thank you for
your great work!

As always, bring *work gloves*, *full shoes or boots*, *long pants*, and
other clothing appropriate for the weather. Bring *water and a snack* if
you like. With Summer here, be prepared for briars because you will be
in the woods. Also be prepared for ticks and poison ivy. For ticks,
we've had success using Permethrin (available at most drugstores and
outdoor retailers) sprayed on cuffs and waistbands on clothing.

You will need to sign a waiver and participation list.

While you don't have to bring any tools because we do have some tools,
we do have a wish list of tools if you'd like to bring them.

We could really use a string trimmer to trim the area around the O'Kelly
Chapel Road trailhead. We can use loppers to clean alongside the trail
here as well.

We can use several cutter mattocks, or a hoe or flat blade style mattock
if you have one. Round or pointed end shovels are helpful in this area
as well. We really need one or more wheelbarrows if you can bring them
as well.

Feel free to bring a small hand pruning saw if you like.

We can always use a pickup truck which you don't mind hauling brush,
logs and trash on the trail, please contact Bill Bussey
<mailto:billbus at gte.net> 919 545-9104 or Frank Bennett
<mailto:FJB675 at hotmail.com> 919-851-3992 so we can make plans.

We'll work till about noon or so.

We normally plan on working at least a little if it is anything short of
a widespread hard rain. Feel free to contact or call Bill Bussey
<mailto:billbus at gte.net> 919 545-9104 or Frank Bennett
<mailto:FJB675 at hotmail.com> 919-851-3992 as late as 8 a.m to verify a
go or no go. However, if you aren't comfortable with the forecast, use
your best judgment and join us or not as you prefer.
If you or your group would like to work days or early evenings other
than Saturdays, please let Bill Bussey <mailto:billbus at gte.net> know.

Please let Curt Devereux <mailto:cdevereux at nc.rr.com> 919 919 544-3948

We are looking for help in opening and closing the gate at our
Fayetteville Road Parking Area

We are willing to pay a small stipend for this work. If you are
interested in finding out more, or know someone who might be interested,
please contact Bill Bussey <mailto:billbus at gte.net> 919 545-9104.

And let me take this opportunity to * Thank You* for all of your help
and support in building, cleaning and clearing the American Tobacco
Trail in 2006 and into 2007. Thanks to your hard work, expertise and
diligent efforts, we are making steady progress. Thousands of trail
users are *now safely using* the sections of the trail and facilities
you have helped clear, clean and build. We get so many wonderful
comments and thanks on how well the trail looks when folks use these
facilities. These trail users are often *amazed* to find out that these
improvements were done *completely* by volunteers. Thank you for the
great work and for volunteering your valuable time to help with this
project. Know that it wouldn't be possible without the great work of
each and every one of you.

Thanks for your help and support in building the American Tobacco Trail.

Happy Trails,

Bill Bussey
