Hi Volunteers for the American Tobacco Trail,

This message is to remind you of our American Tobacco Trail workday,
tomorrow
*Saturday, February 2*, at 9 a.m., at the Eagle Spur trailhead in
southern Durham at 9 a.m.

Please join us, *Saturday, February 2 *at 9 a.m. at at the Eagle Spur
Trailhead on Stagecoach Road in southern Durham at 9 a.m.

*Directions:
*
 >From I-40 Exit 274, NC 751/Jordan Lake go south - away from Durham.
From I-40, go approximately one mile, past Renaissance Parkway, past
Massey Chapel Road on the left, to the first traffic light past
Renaissance Parkway. Turn right onto Stagecoach Road toward Chapel Hill.
Go 1/4 mile. See steel pipe style gates on both sides of the road. Meet
and park here. If you cross a new cement bridge, you've gone too far.

From the South, on NC 751, drive north toward Durham. Cross through the
traffic light at Fayetteville Road intersecting from right. Drive/ride
approximately one mile to next traffic light, which is Stagecoach Road
which intersects from the left. Turn left onto Stagecoach Road. Go 1/4
mile. See steel pipe style gates on both sides of the road. Meet and
park here. If you cross a new cement bridge, you've gone too far.

Our goal is to walk south (left if coming from NC 751) down the Eagle
Spur trail to clean and clear downed trees and limbs, as well as pick up
trash. There are about 10 small trees down across the trail in the 2.5
miles out to Jordan Lake. There are lots of smaller limbs, sticks and
briars which need removal and cutting as well.

There is a group of 12 large trees down 2.3 miles south where the trail
juts out into Jordan Lake. This will take several hours to clean and
clear, not counting the time to hike down there.

We are looking forward to having a group from the Triangle Environmental
Network join us this weekend. This is an annual clearing of the Eagle
Spur that is especially important because we missed last year. Thus, we
can really use all who can join us.

Last week, Bob Salano, Robin Bailey, Alex, Lyle and Lucinda Rusen, Curt
Devereux, Frank Bennett and me installed some erosion control fencing,
as well as some tree protection/worksite marking fencing as part of our
preparations to improve walker, runner and bicycle access to the ATT at
Solite Park in southern Durham. Alex, Lyle and Lucinda led the others in
picking up over five bags of trash and lots of brush and limbs in the
area as well. Thanks to the super job by all. Construction of this
project is now underway.

NOTE: Though this weekend is supposed to be nice, the weather is
notoriously sketchy this time of year. If the weather is obviously bad,
with more than a drizzle, or obviously freezing rain or snow, we will
not hold this workday. Use your best judgment on this. When you do come,
please dress appropriately for the weather.

Feel free to contact or call Bill Bussey <mailto:billbus at gte.net>
919 545-9104 or Frank Bennett <mailto:FJB675 at hotmail.com>
919-851-3992 as late as 8 a.m to verify a go or no go. However, if you
aren't comfortable with the forecast, use your
best judgment and join us or not as you prefer. Please dress
appropriately and bring plenty of water!

As always we'll work till about noon or so. Because of the hiking
involved, at least some of us will probably be out there until at least 1.

*Do note* that if you are volunteering for school *Environmental Service
hours*, and you say you will work for 3 hours, you need to be prepared
to work until noon, or a little after because we need to plan for our
work and cleanup of our work. If you need to leave earlier, you need to
let the workday leader know ahead of time. Thanks!

As always, bring work gloves, full shoes or boots, long pants, and other
clothing appropriate for the weather. Bring water and a snack if you
like. Be prepared for briars because you will be in the woods.

This weekend, be prepared to hike at least a mile. It is 2.5 miles south
down the trail to the lake and 2.5 miles back. Be prepared for more
walking than usual.

You will need to sign a waiver and participation list.

While you don't have to bring any tools because we do have some tools,
we do have a wish list of tools if you'd like to bring them.

Feel free to bring a small hand pruning saw if you like. We can really
use loppers this weekend.

Please bring some trash bags if you like because there will be trash.

If you have a cutter style mattock, please bring it.

We'll work till at least noon, and probably a bit after.

If you or your group would like to work days or early evenings other
than Saturdays, please let Bill Bussey <mailto:billbus at gte.net> know.

Please let Curt Devereux <mailto:cdevereux at nc.rr.com> 919 919 544-3948
Frank Bennett <mailto:FJB675 at hotmail.com> 919-851-3992 or Bill Bussey
<mailto:billbus at gte.net> 919 545-9104 know anytime if you have any
questions.

And let me take this opportunity to *Thank You* for all of your help
and support in building, cleaning and clearing the American Tobacco
Trail in 2007. Thanks to your hard work, expertise and
diligent efforts, we are making steady progress.

Thousands of trail
users are *now safely using* the sections of the trail and facilities
you have helped clear, clean and build. We get so many wonderful
comments and thanks on how well the trail looks when folks use these
facilities. These trail users are often *amazed* to find out that these
improvements were done *completely* by volunteers. Thank you for the
great work and for volunteering your valuable time to help with this
project. Know that it wouldn't be possible without the great work of
each and every one of you.

Thanks for your help and support in building the American Tobacco Trail.

Happy Trails,
