Deep River Trail
<http://www.centralparknc.org/blog/CentralParkNCBlog/index.cfm/2008/4/16/Deep-River-RailTrail>
near Franklinville, north of Ramseur. Directions are below.
We'll be clearing and cleaning the Deep River Trail in a similar manner
to our American Tobacco Trail workdays. Wear the same things. Bring the
same tools. Or don't bring any tools if you like.
This will give you a sneak peek at North Carolina's newest rail trail,
as well as show the trail managers how great a job we do! It is
definitely worth the drive to see and experience this beautiful trail.
If you'd like to meet at a central location in the Triangle and carpool,
please contact Bill Bussey** <mailto:billbus at gte.net>*
*please or Frank Bennett <mailto:FJB675 at hotmail.com> .

Directions:
>From south Durham:*
Take NC-751 south to US-64 (about 10 miles south of Southpoint Mall).
Turn right (west) on US-64 and go 42 miles until you enter the town
of Ramseur.
Once in Ramseur watch for signs saying NC-22. You want to go North
(right) on NC-22 (exit just before a light) and go about 1.5 miles. Go
LEFT when you get to Rising Sun Way (NOT Sunrise Way, which is on your
right. Also, if you miss Rising Sun Way and continue on NC-22, you will
come down into downtown Franklinville and see Riverside Park; this is a
sign that you have come too far.)
Go all the way down Rising Sun Way to the end (it's a short empty
street) and park.
*From north Durham* :
Take I-85 west to exit 145 (downtown/Burlington/Liberty) for NC-49
(about 27 miles)
Take NC-49 south, through Liberty (you'll need to make a left turn
at the lights to follow NC-49) and continue down until NC-49 runs into
US-64 in Ramseur.
Go right (west) on US-64 through Ramseur for about 1.6 miles and
watch for NC-22 North (a right turn, just before a light). Take this
turn and drive about 1.5 miles to Rising Sun Way.
Go LEFT when you get to Rising Sun Way (DO NOT take Sunrise Way,
which is on your right. Also, if you miss Rising Sun Way and continue on
NC-22, you will come down into downtown Franklinville and see Riverside
Park; this is a sign that you have come too far.)
Go all the way down Rising Sun Way to the end (it's a short empty
street) and park.
*From Chapel Hill (most scenic!)*
Go west through Carrboro on to Jones Ferry Road. Continue out on
Jones Ferry Road and just outside town you go over University Lake and
come to the light at Old Greensboro Road. Go right. Continue on this
road for 11.2 miles. Turn right at Pleasant Hill Liberty Road (there's a
church on the corner) and go up this road for 2.1 miles until it runs
into NC-49. Go left on NC-49.
Continue on NC-49 for 4 miles; you'll enter the town of Liberty.
Turn left at the stoplight in downtown Liberty to keep on NC-49. Go
another 10.2 miles on NC-49 and it will run into the town of Ramseur at
US-64. Go right (west) through Ramseur for 1.6 miles and watch for the
turnoff for North NC-22 (just before a light).Go right here and drive
another 1.5 miles until you reach Rising Sun Way on your LEFT.
Go LEFT on Rising Sun Way.
(DO NOT take Sunrise Way, which is on your right. Also, if you miss
Rising Sun Way and continue on NC-22, you will come down into downtown
Franklinville and see Riverside Park; this is a sign that you have come
too far.)
Go all the way down Rising Sun Way to the end (it's a short empty
street) and park.
*From Raleigh/Cary:*
Take US-1 South to US-64 West (exit 98B).
Go west on US-64 all the way through Pittsboro and past Siler City
into Ramseur (51.2 miles).
IN Ramseur, watch for North NC-22. It will be a right turn at a
light. Go right at the turn and drive about 1.5 miles, to Rising Sun Way.
Go LEFT when you get to Rising Sun Way (DO NOT take Sunrise Way, which
is on your right. Also, if you miss Rising Sun Way and continue on
NC-22, you will come down into downtown Franklinville and see Riverside
Park; this is a sign that you have come too far.)
Go all the way down Rising Sun Way to the end (it's a short empty
street) and park.
At this Saturdays' workday, as always, bring *work gloves, full shoes
or boots, long pants, *and other clothing appropriate for the weather.
I generally wear a lightweight long sleeve shirt to protect against
briars and sun. Bring water and a snack if you like.
Be prepared for briars and ticks because you will be in grass and in the
woods.
You will need to sign a waiver and participation list.
While you don't have to bring any tools because we do have some tools,
we do have a wish list of tools if you'd like to bring them.
We can use string trimmers for this workday.
If you have a mower of any kind - 20" push is fine - and care to bring
it, please do so. We'll pay for the gas and oil.
If you have some, bring a pair of loppers. Also, a small hand saw will
be helpful as well.
If you have a pole saw - sometimes known as a tree pruner - please bring
it. It will get a lot of use that day!
We'll work till about 1 p.m., and probably a bit after. We'll go have
lunch together after we are done.
If you or your group would like to work days or early evenings other
than Saturdays, please let Bill Bussey <mailto:billbus at gte.net> know.
Please let Frank Bennett <mailto:FJB675 at hotmail.com> 919-851-3992 or

*More News
*
Construction of the Chatham County section of the ATT has begun! Holmes
Contracting are working first on the section of trail between the
Chatham/Wake County line to the south, and New Hope Church Road to the
north. This section of trail is now CLOSED because it is a construction
zone. They've been cutting down a LOT of trees. *Please stay out of this
area while construction is going on.* Please read and heed all signs
related to construction in this area.
For more information be sure to check out our TRTC/ATT News Link

The I-40 Bridge Design meeting was held at Durham City Council Chambers
at Durham City Hall on Wednesday, September 17. Here is a letter
describing the project. <http://triangletrails.org/ATTMEET08.PDF>
About fifteen trail users attended during the two hours. While we are
disappointed that more didn't attend - probably due to the early hour
and very late notice - Durham staff receive some good feedback on the
two bridge designs.
You can print out our latest ATT map *right now* at
http://www.triangletrails.org/ATT.HTM . Click on both links under the
thumbnail for both sides of the map.
Don't let the thumbnail fool you. This is our new color ATT map done by
Wayne Horton of Winston-Salem.
And let me take this opportunity to *Thank You* for all of your help
and support in building, cleaning and clearing the American Tobacco
Trail in 2007. Thanks to your hard work, expertise and
diligent efforts, we are making steady progress.
Thousands of trail
users are *now safely using* the sections of the trail and facilities
you have helped clear, clean and build. We get so many wonderful
comments and thanks on how well the trail looks when folks use these
facilities. These trail users are often *amazed* to find out that these
improvements were done *completely* by volunteers. Thank you for the
great work and for volunteering your valuable time to help with this
project. Know that it wouldn't be possible without the great work of
each and every one of you.
Thanks for your help and support in building the American Tobacco Trail.
Happy Trails,
Bill Bussey
