Hi Volunteers for the American Tobacco Trail,

This very, very late 
message is to remind you of our American Tobacco Trail workday, tomorrow,
*Saturday, January 31*, at the Scott King Road Access

Our goal is to clean and clear the ATT probably north of Scott King Road.

We'll also do general trimming of growing briars, low hanging limbs, 
maintenance and upkeep, as well as empty our trash cans on this heavily 
used section of trail.

**At this Saturdays' workday, as always, bring *work gloves, full shoes 
or boots, long pants,  *and other clothing appropriate for the weather. 
Keeping hydrated is important even in cold weather, so 
bring water and a snack if you like. Be prepared for briars and bugs 
because you will probably be in grass and in the woods.
 
The weather on Saturday is calling for clear conditions but a bit colder 
than usual weather. Use your own judgment to make the call whether you 
want to attend the workday in sketchy or uncomfortable conditions. We 
generally do not work in heavy or constant rain.

You will need to sign a waiver and participation list.

While you don't have to bring any tools because we do have some tools,
both workdays do have a wish list of tools if you'd like to bring them.

We can use string trimmers for this workday.

If you have some, bring a pair of loppers. 

If you have a pole saw, please bring it.

Feel free to bring a small hand pruning saw if you like.
 
We can always use a pickup truck which you don't mind hauling brush,

Remember, you *can always *help the ATT and other trails, greenways and 
paths in the Triangle - or anywhere on the planet - by picking up and 
hauling out at least one piece of trash, or picking up and throwing as 
far off the trail, at least one stick, limb or fallen tree, on every 
visit or use. If everyone who used our greenways, trails or paths picked 
up and removed at least one piece of trash, stick or limb, we'd have the 
cleanest trails around!

*Construction now in Progress on Chatham ATT Bridges and Trail
*
Construction of the Chatham County section of the ATT has begun! Holmes 
Contracting is finishing up work on the first section of trail between 
the Chatham/Wake County line to the south, and New Hope Church Road to 
the north. They have now begun clearing work on the trail north of New 
Hope Church Road to O'Kelly Chapel Road and north to Northeast Creek. 
Note, this is the first report of construction this far north. This 
section of trail is now CLOSED because it is a construction zone. 
They've been cutting down a LOT of trees. *Please stay out of this area 
while construction is going on. *Please read and heed all signs related 
to construction in this area.

The Town of Cary has asked us to tell all that the *ATT in Chatham 
County should be considered closed until *the entire 4.6 mile section is 
opened in* June 2009*. Pray for good weather!

Span Builders, LLC, which is the subcontractor for the Chatham County 
bridges, has *now started *construction on the *Panther Creek trestle*. 
They are accessing this via Pittard Sears Road. However, as mentioned 
above, *trail clearing is now happening between O'Kelly Chapel Road to 
the north and New Hope Church Road in the south. Please stay off the 
trail in this area. *

*Design of the ATT south of NC 54 is now underway*

For more information on this on the design of the ATT south of NC 54 in

The Durham City Council at their November 3 meeting unanimously selected 
the low-profile arch as the design for the ATT I-40 Bridge Design. Final

Thank you for your support of the Triangle Rails to Trails Conservancy!  
We have had an exciting 2008 of progress in the development of the 
American Tobacco Trail.  Construction has begun on the trail in Chatham 
County, including the long-anticipated bridges over Panther and 
Northeast Creeks.  We have been excited to see and participate in 
progress on planning for the bridge over I-40 and connecting trails 
including several very well-attended public meetings with the City of 
Durham, and we look forward to monitoring and advocating for completion 
of these projects over the next few years.

We are grateful to our loyal volunteers whose help is essential for 
regular trail maintenance and special projects. Our special 
accomplishments in 2008 include a partnership with the Godiva Track Club 
to install a connector trail to Solite Park, as well as completion of 
construction of the parking trailhead on Fayetteville Road in Durham.

Our work will continue in 2009 and beyond, and donations

comments and thanks on how well the trail looks when folks use these
facilities. These trail users are often *amazed* to find out that these
improvements were done *completely* by volunteers. Thank you for the
great work and for volunteering your valuable time to help with this
project. Know that it wouldn't be possible without the great work of
each and every one of you.
