Happy Valentines Day Volunteers for the American Tobacco Trail,

This message is to remind you of our American Tobacco Trail workday,*
Saturday, February 14*, at the intersection of South Street and Lawson
Street
<http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&q=South+Street+and+Lawson+Street,+Durham,+NC&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=X&oi=geocode_result&resnum=1&ct=image>
just south of Downtown Durham.

Please join us for this workday, *Saturday, February 14*, at South
Street and Lawson Street
<http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&q=South+Street+and+Lawson+Street,+Durham,+NC&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=X&oi=geocode_result&resnum=1&ct=image>
at 9:00 a.m.*
*
Check the link or Google South Street and W Lawson Street, Durham, NC
27707 for directions from where you live.

We'll be continuing our trash pick up on the American Tobacco Trail
which we started last week at Hillside High School. We made it up to
Fayetteville Street. This week we'll pick up trash from Lawson Street
south to Fayetteville Street. If we have time, we'll pick up trash north
to downtown. This is to help prepare the trail for the Coach Bubba Race
on ATT <http://www.coachbubba.com/> next Saturday. See more info below.

Last weekend, Mary and Brittany Wood, Katrina Yamnushevich (spelled just
like it sounds :-) !) Lauren Rackley, Bob Salano, Frank Bennett and Bill
Bussey picked up over 20 bags of trash and bottles on a mile of the ATT
from Hillside HS to Fayetteville Street. Thanks to this great team for a
neat job. The trail looks a lot better in this area.

At this Saturdays' workday, as always, bring *work gloves, full shoes or
boots, long pants, *and other clothing appropriate for the weather.
Keeping hydrated is important even in cold weather, so
bring water and a snack if you like. Be prepared for briars and bugs
because you will probably be in grass and in the woods.

The weather on Saturday is calling for possible showers and seasonable
temperatures. Use your own judgment to make the call whether you want to
attend the workday in sketchy or uncomfortable conditions. We generally
do not work in heavy or constant rain.

You will need to sign a waiver and participation list.

While you don't have to bring any tools because we do have some tools,
both workdays do have a wish list of tools if you'd like to bring them.

Please bring trash/garbage bags if you want to contribute to the cause!

We can use string trimmers for this workday.

If you have some, bring a pair of loppers.

We can always use a pickup truck which you don't mind hauling brush,
logs and trash. Please contact Bill Bussey <mailto:billbus at gte.net>
919 545-9104 or Frank Bennett <mailto:FJB675 at hotmail.com>
919-851-3992 so we can make plans.

We'll work till about noon.

If you or your group would like to work days or early evenings other
than Saturdays, please let Bill Bussey <mailto:billbus at gte.net> know.

Please let Frank Bennett <mailto:FJB675 at hotmail.com> 919-851-3992 or
Bill Bussey <mailto:billbus at gte.net> 919 545-9104
know anytime if you have any questions.

For more information on ATT workdays, please see our Volunteering page
at: http://triangletrails.org/VOLUNTEERS.HTM

For directions to workday meeting places and ATT Trailheads go to our
directions page at: http://www.triangletrails.org/DIRECTIONS.HTM

Remember, you *can always *help the ATT and other trails, greenways and
paths in the Triangle - or anywhere on the planet - by picking up and
hauling out at least one piece of trash, or picking up and throwing as
far off the trail, at least one stick, limb or fallen tree, on every
visit or use. If everyone who used our greenways, trails or paths picked
up and removed at least one piece of trash, stick or limb, we'd have the
cleanest trails around!

Future workdays are still being planned. Here is the tentative schedule
for upcoming workdays. *Note that these can change if there is an area
on the trail that needs immediate attention.*

*Construction now in Progress on Chatham ATT Bridges and Trail
*
Construction of the Chatham County section of the ATT has begun! Holmes
Contracting is finishing up work on the first section of trail between
the Chatham/Wake County line to the south, and New Hope Church Road to
the north. They have now begun clearing work on the trail north of New
Hope Church Road to O'Kelly Chapel Road and north to Northeast Creek.
Note, this is the first report of construction this far north. This
section of trail is now CLOSED because it is a construction zone.
They've been cutting down a LOT of trees. *Please stay out of this area
while construction is going on. *Please read and heed all signs related
to construction in this area.

The Town of Cary has asked us to tell all that the *ATT in Chatham
County should be considered closed until *the entire 4.6 mile section is
opened in* June 2009*. Pray for good weather!

Span Builders, LLC, which is the subcontractor for the Chatham County
bridges, has *now started *construction on the *Panther Creek trestle*.
They are accessing this via Pittard Sears Road. However, as mentioned
above, *trail clearing is now happening between O'Kelly Chapel Road to
the north and New Hope Church Road in the south. Please stay off the
trail in this area. *

most situations. You can read all about it at the website. Check it
out!* It works very well!* It is now my search engine of choice! Please

*Please Remember the ATT in your Gifts
<http://www.triangletrails.org/MEMBERS.HTM>*

Thank you for your support of the Triangle Rails to Trails Conservancy!
We have had an exciting 2008 of progress in the development of the
American Tobacco Trail. Construction has begun on the trail in Chatham
County, including the long-anticipated bridges over Panther and
Northeast Creeks. We have been excited to see and participate in
progress on planning for the bridge over I-40 and connecting trails
including several very well-attended public meetings with the City of
Durham, and we look forward to monitoring and advocating for completion
of these projects over the next few years.

We are grateful to our loyal volunteers whose help is essential for
regular trail maintenance and special projects. Our special
accomplishments in 2008 include a partnership with the Godiva Track Club
to install a connector trail to Solite Park, as well as completion of
construction of the parking trailhead on Fayetteville Road in Durham.

Subliminal Note: Environmental Education Students: *Don't forget to
share this appeal <http://www.triangletrails.org/MEMBERS.HTM>with your
parents! Or _you _**make a contribution!*

Our work will continue in 2009 and beyond, and donations
<http://www.triangletrails.org/MEMBERS.HTM> of any amount are gladly
accepted and needed. TRTC will continue to apply for trails-related
grants but funds from memberships and donations remain an important
mechanism for acquiring tools and supplies used in our year-round
efforts to maintain the ATT and other local trails. We need donations
and memberships to pay for our trail workday insurance as well as to
assist in matching grant funding. Thank you for your continued support,
and happy holidays!

You Lookin' for Maps?!

*You can print out our latest ATT map *right now* at
http://www.triangletrails.org/ATT.HTM . Click on both links under the
thumbnail for both sides of the map.

Don't let the thumbnail fool you. This is our new color ATT map done by
Wayne Horton of Winston-Salem.

And let me take this opportunity to *Thank You* for all of your help
and support in building, cleaning and clearing the American Tobacco
Trail in 2008. Thanks to your hard work, expertise and
diligent efforts, we are making steady progress.

Thousands of trail
users are *now safely using* the sections of the trail and facilities
you have helped clear, clean and build. We get so many wonderful
comments and thanks on how well the trail looks when folks use these
facilities. These trail users are often *amazed* to find out that these
improvements were done *completely* by volunteers. Thank you for the
great work and for volunteering your valuable time to help with this
project. Know that it wouldn't be possible without the great work of
each and every one of you.

Thanks for your help and support in building the American Tobacco Trail.

Happy Trails,

Bill Bussey
