American Tobacco Trail workday,* Saturday, February 28*, on the Durham
Sandy Creek Trail and Park 9 a.m. Pre-Registration required

We'll be working on several projects in Sandy Creek Park, as well as on
the connecting Sandy Creek Trail. In coordination with Durham Parks and
Recreation Adventure Programs <mailto:%20Natasha.Teasley at durhamnc.gov> ,
we'll be starting/continuing the process of making a walking loop around
wetlands in that area. It should be an informative and interesting workday.
If you are an Environmental Education Student, this will be an
especially good workday to attend. We'd like as many volunteers as we
can get for this workday.
Two weeks ago, Mary and Brittany Wood, Roger Truitt, Bob Salano, Frank
Bennett and Bill Bussey picked up over 25 bags of trash, bottles,
appliances, carpet rolls and trash dumps on a mile of the ATT from
Fayetteville Street north to the future Lawson Street connector. Later
that week, Bob Salano went out on is own and picked up trash from Mile 0
at Morehead Ave. south to Lawson Street. Way to go Bob! Thanks to all of
this great team for a great job. Thanks also to the City of Durham
Public Works Impact Team for picking up the many bags and piles of trash
and junk. The trail looks a lot better in this area.
Last week, Dilys Bowman, Bob Salano, Frank Bennett and Bill Bussey
volunteered at the Coach Bubba Race on the ATT
<http://www.coachbubba.com/>. Over 800 runners participated in these 4
mile and 20 kilometer races. The Godiva Track Club
<http://www.carolinagodiva.org/>, organizers of the race donates part of
the proceeds to TRTC to make the ATT better. Thanks to the work by our
volunteers picking up trash and junk the prior two weeks, the ATT looked
better than *ever *for the race.
At this Saturdays' workday, as always, bring *work gloves, full shoes or
boots, long pants, *and other clothing appropriate for the weather.
Keeping hydrated is important even in cold weather, so
bring water and a snack if you like. Be prepared for briars and bugs
because you will probably be in grass and in the woods. Ticks are now
starting to appear. Be prepared to inspect yourself carefully during and
after the workday.
Use your own judgment to make the call whether you want to attend the
workday in sketchy or uncomfortable conditions. We generally do not work
in heavy or constant rain.
You will need to sign a waiver and participation list.
While you don't have to bring any tools because we do have some tools,
both workdays do have a wish list of tools if you'd like to bring them.
Please bring trash/garbage bags if you want to contribute to the cause!
We can use string trimmers for this workday. We can also use a blower.
If you have some, bring a pair of loppers. We can use a small saw, as
well as a pole saw.
We can really use several wheelbarrows or carts at this workday.
If you have a shovel of any kind, round or flat blade, please bring it.
Don't forget to mark your tools so that you can readily identify them!
We can always use a pickup truck which you don't mind hauling brush,

Remember, you *can always *help the ATT and other trails, greenways and
paths in the Triangle - or anywhere on the planet - by picking up and
hauling out at least one piece of trash, or picking up and throwing as
far off the trail, at least one stick, limb or fallen tree, on every
visit or use. If everyone who used our greenways, trails or paths picked
up and removed at least one piece of trash, stick or limb, we'd have the
cleanest trails around!

*Construction now in Progress on Chatham ATT Bridges and Trail
*
Construction of the Chatham County section of the ATT has begun! Holmes
Contracting is finishing up work on the first section of trail between
the Chatham/Wake County line to the south, and New Hope Church Road to
the north. They have now begun clearing work on the trail north of New
Hope Church Road to O'Kelly Chapel Road and north to Northeast Creek.
Note, this is the first report of construction this far north. This
section of trail is now CLOSED because it is a construction zone.
They've been cutting down a LOT of trees. *Please stay out of this area
while construction is going on. *Please read and heed all signs related
to construction in this area.
The Town of Cary has asked us to tell all that the *ATT in Chatham
County should be considered closed until *the entire 4.6 mile section is
opened in* August 2009*. Note this is a change from earlier reports!
Span Builders, LLC, which is the subcontractor for the Chatham County
bridges, has *now started *construction on the *Panther Creek trestle*.
They are accessing this via Pittard Sears Road. However, as mentioned
above, *trail clearing is now happening between O'Kelly Chapel Road to
the north and New Hope Church Road in the south. Please stay off the
trail in this area. *

The Durham City Council at their November 3 meeting unanimously selected
the low-profile arch as the design for the ATT I-40 Bridge Design. Final

Thank you for your support of the Triangle Rails to Trails Conservancy!
We have had an exciting 2008 of progress in the development of the
American Tobacco Trail. Construction has begun on the trail in Chatham
County, including the long-anticipated bridges over Panther and
Northeast Creeks. We have been excited to see and participate in
progress on planning for the bridge over I-40 and connecting trails
including several very well-attended public meetings with the City of
Durham, and we look forward to monitoring and advocating for completion
of these projects over the next few years.
We are grateful to our loyal volunteers whose help is essential for
regular trail maintenance and special projects. Our special
accomplishments in 2008 include a partnership with the Godiva Track Club
to install a connector trail to Solite Park, as well as completion of
construction of the parking trailhead on Fayetteville Road in Durham.**
Our work will continue in 2009 and beyond, and donations

accepted and needed. TRTC will continue to apply for trails-related
grants but funds from memberships and donations remain an important
mechanism for acquiring tools and supplies used in our year-round
