The Wake County Sheriff's Office provides full service to all of the citizens of Wake County in law enforcement, service of process, detention services and court services.

The Wake County Sheriff's Office employs 480 personnel working in five divisions including Patrol, Investigative, Judicial Services, Detention and Administrative. Through these divisions the Wake County Sheriff's Office provides patrol and investigative services as well as crime prevention, service of civil process and courtroom security. The detention division operates three separate detention facilities which safely and securely house all persons committed to custody from anywhere in Wake County. The Wake County Sheriff's Office, including the main Wake County Detention Center, is located in the Wake County Public Safety Center in downtown Raleigh.

The Wake County Sheriff's Office also serves as host for the Civil/Criminal Justice Automation System which provides advanced, modern computerized criminal justice information, photos and document imaging for all law enforcement agencies in Wake County.
